I was checking my local patch (Lake Contrary, and oxbow lake, at the south end of Saint Joseph, Missouri) this morning hoping to find a few more shorebirds (waders) arriving from their northern breeding grounds. I only saw Killdeer, Spotted and Least Sandpipers. But then I noticed a bird perched on a buoy in the swimming area at the lake. It was a tern and the only gull/tern in the lake area. I was able to study it at lenght while it was perched, stretching and then flying. It turned out to be a new "year bird" for Missouri.

238. Common Tern

After about a three-week dry spell, I finally saw a couple of new birds for the year. I'm now up to 636.

635. Sedge Wren
636. Great Horned Owl

In addition to the birds listed, I added Little Blue Heron to my Indiana year list (which is now up to 205).

Can't believe it took me so long to find a Great Horned Owl this year.

I just got three "armchair" year ticks and two lifers, so my Year List is now up to 639.

637. Mitred Parakeet
638. Common Hill Myna
639. Common Myna

I just got the latest issue of Birding, the magazine of the American Birding Association. One of the articles indicates that Mitred Parakeet is accepted by the AOU as an established exotic. Since I saw Mitred Parakeets last month in Florida (where they seem to be fairly common), I can count the bird as a lifer and a year bird on my World List. However, since it not accepted by the ABA, I can't count the bird on my ABA Area list.

This led me to check out the AOU Checklist and I discovered that Common Hill Myna and Common Myna are also accepted as established exotics, and I also saw these in Florida.

Another one for the list from Clee Hill, Shrops.

238. Female Woodchat Shrike.

I have attached two photos. Unfortunately it was a bit too far for DSLR photography but i had a go. The 2nd image is the DSLR shot and is heavily cropped.

The first is digiscoped and sadly the sun was in my eyes and I just didn't get this shot right.

A hard morning birding, getting wet and muddy slogging through the muck and mire of a nearby marsh. The effort was worth it as I added two birds to my Year List. Now up to 641.

640. Short-billed Dowitcher
641. Stilt Sandpiper

After a fruitless drive to Anglesey after the Black Stork I did at least add a couple of year ticks there, plus one on the way back home at Gailey in Staffs. Apparently it flew off at 5pm last night (why couldn't someone have phoned that info in)

240. Manx Shearwater
241. Chough
242. Black-necked Grebe

My list is up to a meagre 158, after the additions of Whimbrel, Curlew Sand, Ringed Plover :eek!: and Whimbrel in Cornwall.

Made my yearly day trip to Lincoln State Park in southern Indiana, which is the only place in the state where Mississippi Kites are known to breed. I found my target bird, so I'm now up to 642.

642. Mississippi Kite

I was also relieved to find a Summer Tanager for my Indiana year list (I had seen it in Florida in June for my Year List). I should already have seen the species in Indiana, but had missed it so far, and could easily have missed it for the year.

I have missed summer tanager a few times, but there is a local place where you can hear females and juveniles calling even if you do not see one.
