Yesterday at Portland with Dan and Menzie (thanks to both of them, and Tom McKinney for trying to get us some details on the Melodious Warbler, which we didn't find in time before I went home):

160) Pied Flycatcher (Lifer - how embarassing)
161) Redstart
162) Whinchat

All of which I should've seen before now...

Since the beginning of August, I've seen at least one new year bird a week (and some of those year birds were lifers!) All were seen at our cabin in Upstate New York just a mile or so from the shore of the Great Sacandaga Lake.

The first weekend (08-05 thru 08-07), on a Saturday morning, before we left to go to the cabin, a large bird landed in the pine tree in our front yard. I snapped a photo, and judging from the long tail, predatory hooked beak, and small size (for a raptor), I ID'd it as a Sharp-Shinned Hawk, which was my year's first. Later that day, at the cabin, my first-ever Hermit Thrush foraged on the ground just outside the living room window. On our way home on the 7th, while filling up at a gas station, I saw an Eastern Kingbird perched on a dead tree branch nearby.

So the first round of year birds yielded:
68. Sharp-Shinned Hawk
69. Hermit Thrush LIFER
70. Eastern Kingbird

The second weekend of August (08-12 thru 08-14) was somewhat uneventful, but the fleeting glimpse of my first-ever Magnolia Warbler on Saturday made the weekend a good one.

71. Magnolia Warbler LIFER

The third weekend of August (08-19 thru 08-21) yielded my first-ever Scarlet Tanager male, in all its blood-red glory! It was seen with a female, and this was my first of the year. Again, this was seen on a Saturday.

72. Scarlet Tanager

The fourth weekend of August (08-26 thru 08-28) was, IMHO, my favorite of the month, a brilliant Black-Throated Blue Warbler. This beautiful blue, black and white bird was my very first one, and I saw three of them! There were two males and 1 female. Again, these were seen on a Saturday.

73. Black-Throated Blue Warbler LIFER

With the migration season coming soon, all the migratory birds are starting to show themselves, especially to feed on as much food as possible to make the long journeys south.

So I'm at 73 as of now, and hope to see more in the coming weeks. Hopefully, I'll finally break 100 confirmed year birds by the end of the year.

Just came back from a three day long visit to the eastern Sulu Islands (located between Sulawesi and Halmahera), I stayed on both Mangole and Sanana. My first visit to these Islands so a few new species was recorded. But the Islands share lots of species with Sulawesi so a lot of "old ones" was also recorded. A great visit to one of the most rarely visited regions in Indonesia, hope to go to the third Island soon, Taliabu.

A hugely unexpected self-found local tick this morning - Ortolan Bunting......178.
And this evening - a juv Black Tern on a seawatch, which makes 179 (and is also a patch tick). the seawatch also produced a Long-tailed Skua, which isn't a year tick, but IS a very smart bird indeed, and one which I would like to gloat about!! ;)

Sounds like a pretty sweet day to me Gavin, wish I could have more days like that, no less than 2 lifers there for me (still yet to catch up with LTSkua!)

Envious from Staffordshire.
