Something weird happened at a nuthatch nest in my backyard. (1 Viewer)

The chicks had hatched, everything was good, I was gone for 5 days and when I came back all there is inside is a lot of ants. Not just that, but both of the parents who always visited my birdfeeder are nowhere to be seen. I feel like the chance of both of the parents having died in the span of a few days is low, so what is most likely to have happened?

Possibly the nest has been predated. There is a lot of wild food around at the moment so without young to feed the adults may be off further afield.
