SOS - help needed for baby bird (1 Viewer)

Hi,

I am currently on holiday in Cyprus. Yesterday we noticed a nest outside our house above the patio - later on I saw mama bird fly out of the nest and as she was flying away she dropped an egg in to our swimming pool! I ran over and scooped the egg out and it was hatching in the pool - finished off hatching in my hand. Had no what to do apart from place baby bird on to a towel to dry off and in to warm box. I called a UK wildlife rescue centre for advice and also one over here in cyprus. The advice was to either try and feed bird every 20 minutes, or place bird back in to its nest. I thought placing it back in to the nest seemed best and mama bird returned. Im wondering if this was the best thing to do or if i should have tried to further help the bird, im not sure it got the nutrients needed from the yolk. I managed to record inside the nest today to see how its doing when mama bird was away - ill place the video here.

Just want some advice please :) Thank you

Welcome to Birdforum.

Yes, it was best to return it to the nest.

Please now leave the nest alone as putting your camera inside it or being near it could well cause the parents to abandon it.

Hi, welcome to the forum on behalf of the staff and moderators. I think you will find us a friendly and helpful group.

Hi annahs and a warm welcome from me too. I wonder if it was the mother that took and dropped the egg and not some intruder, as it seems such odd behaviour.

You really had no choice about returning the wee might to the nest, as trying to raise such a young nestling is so, so difficult, even for the experienced rehabbers and losses are generally quite high. Well done for the care you took of him at the outset. I guess you well have returned home before he is ready to fledge?

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I hope to hear about all the birds you see when out and about.

Hi, thank you for your lovely reply. I did think it was odd too but it was definitely mummy bird, someone mentioned that maybe the egg was stuck to her feathers and fell. I’m just glad I was there to see and help the baby bird who immediately starting hatching in the swimming pool. I just feel so sorry for it if it needs greater assistance to survive as I am pretty sure it’s prematurely hatched due to the fall 💔
I am actually here for two and a half weeks.

Hi. Have you thought about taking the bird to a bird sanctuary where they can give him professional care? Looks like you have done a good job so far. And I can see you’re very caring. If you still have access to the bird, I suggest a sanctuary. Blessings. 🩷
