Some excellent information coming from the ground and better and more up to date than I can provide so I'll duck out here if that's OK. Sal's trip report looks amazing with some great photography too, I'll need to set some time aside to read it all. Before I go I'll just add some to some of the comments. Secretary Bird ~ don't get your hopes up. :eat: the grass was high after high rainfall in the region when we were there. (Jan 2006) Lammergeier ~ forget it! Bateleur ~ everywhere. African Fish, Tawny & Longcrested Eagle ~ You may add Martial to that list too. :t: Giant Kingfisher ~ every chance, learn the call of Woodland too because you'll hear them everywhere, cracking birds. Painted Snipe ~ no chance if I was with you, Hong Kong, Gambia, Kenya, S.A., not a sniff. :C African Jacana ~ it's a given. Purple Crested Lourie ~ Saw them at Mkuzi & Ndumo but not KNP. Burchall's Cougal ~ no chance, saw plenty of Burchell's Coucal though ;) Namaqua Dove & Green Pigeon ~ Ground, tree. White backed Night Heron ~ don't even think about it, they're almost nocturnal. Any Mousebird ~ did I get the p ripped out of me or what? I love these birds. Red-faced are gorgeous. Korhaans & Bustards ~ first bird we saw in KNP, Red-crested Korhaan followed by Southern White-crowned Shrike followed by Gymnogene. Black-breasted Bustards really know how to woo the ladies with their call, has to be seen to be believed, saw one on the night drive displaying. I would strongly urge you to invest in another 8gb card, you'll see more European Rollers & Red-backed Shrikes than you've seen anywhere in your life and if you come across a few big cats at the end of the day you could easily fill one if shooting RAW. Have a great trip. :t:
