Totally agree, this report alone covers a lengthy period, actually almost 6 months, and aside that I have spent an additional 13 or so months in southern Africa, all non-stop birding - however the region is vast and even if we confine ourselves to the borders of South Africa itself, it is a huge country. Select best areas and concentrate on them is good advice. A four day trip in the Cape Town area could include the all the Cape Town area without problem, plus a trip up to Katbakkies which is a really stunning area, even if not necessarily the most productive in pure terms of numbers of species - but amongst my favourit sites in Cape Province. In the east, Krugar could easily occupy a month ;), but whatever you do, do not miss Sani Pass - most amazing place in South Africa in my humble opinion. You do not need two nights to get to Johannesburg from Krugar - one day is enough and the one place in South Africa that you don't want to spend time in Jo'burg. Apologies to any South Africans reading, but that city ranks as just about the worst place in all Africa to visit. Second piece of advice, even if you have to rob a bank to do it, do include a pelagic, even if it means the more expensive midweek variant. You will kick yourself forever if you skip it - diet a little from now till then, then go. Remember, in reality, you need no guides in all South Africa - use that money to cover the pelagic.
