Tuesday 30th A wet cold front forecasted to move into the area arrived about 10 hours early. We chose to spend our final morning hours at the Crescent Bend Nature Center, (http://wherethetrailsare.com/2012/02/crescent-bend-nature-park-schertz-tx/) for no other reasons than it was convenient and had been reported on a regular basis on eBird. Taking turns walking on the park roads in the light drizzle and warming up in the car, we added American Crow, Cedar Waxwings and a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker to our trip list. We found a Neotropic Cormorant by the river. Common birds in the thinly treed park included the Black-crested Titmouse, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Great-tailed Grackle, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Ladder-backed Woodpecker and a heard only Red-shouldered Hawk. Despite the extensive grasses, it was difficult seeing many sparrows until we got to an area with well-stocked feeders and covered blind. Chipping and House Sparrows made up most of the birds on the ground. House Finches and a few Carolina Chickadees came in from the trees. I did note one White-crowned Sparrow. A good portion of the Center was never birded. The proximity to the airport meant we may try it again on a future Texas trip. Forty minutes later, we had filled up on sub $2 gas, returned the car to Alamo and were waiting for the shuttle to the airport. Despite some poor online ratings, we had no problem with Alamo. 1450 miles in Hyundai Accent. Peanut butter, considered a liquid, was lost at security. Our first trouble-free Delta flight in several years. Note to self: find a tighter fitting hat for future visits to south Texas.
