And 'Summer Nights' and 'Asleep'. He was on a roll.

Have we had 'Back to the Old House' yet?

Graham

He certainly is on a roll. Not sure about Back to the old house but I wonder if he could get Rusholme Ruffians in? I've not being watching it religously but I might have to now and see how many more he gets in.

Not sure about Back To Old House - should be quite easy. When he said to Kate "You Just Haven't Earned It Yet Baby", her reaction suggested she didn't know - it was early on in the series though.

Hi there

Yes, Chris gets a little too scientific at times, and needs to keep it more simplistic especially for the younger audience who will be watching too. :-O

Oops, forgot about the young ones watching, but yes a good balance is needed which I think they have. Last night on the Unsprung show, he started talking about rods and cones in birds' eyes and how they influence vision - colour, sharpness etc. I knew a little bit about this already, but it was good to see someone attempt to get into something a bit more deeply than these programmes normally allow. But he did explain it clearly that I'm sure most older children would understand too.

Forgive me for being ignorant if it's already been said in this thread, but is there a reason for him mentioning all these Smiths songs?

It's probably an in-joke and he bet with someone he could get the titles in. I've not read anything from him about why he's doing it (although I've looked to be honest).

I know he's a big Smiths fan. I agree that this must be for a bet.
The fact that 99% of the audience will be oblivious shows what a good job he's doing serruptitiously dropping these little nuggets every now and again.

Girlfriend In A Coma will be the hardest to achieve, I guess! The ven diagram that shows the intersection between birders and smiths fans cannot be that big surely!?!?!

I wonder if he's partly taking the pish (hey look a birding pun that's also sweary!) too as he seems to slip these comments into the middle of conversations and Kate Humble just talks on as normal.

really enjoyed tues program ,i fail to see all the faults everyone else posts about, at the end of the day its their knowledge that really counts, i didn,t expect the swallow to be alive, the stoats were very interesting, along with the wasp bit, chris mentioned he has never seen a water rail chick,i seen one and filmed it at kinnordy loch scotland

It is for a bet. Apparently his friend bet him he couldn't slip a song title into every show and as we can see he's still going strong. Friend didn't specify which band though, Chris thought about The Clash but decided they were too early for many viewers and instead chose The Smiths.

Was on the Springwatch Blog or something. Don't think he told Kate early on in the series but now she must be wise to it. The 'You just haven't earned it yet, baby...' was sort of a setup though. Chris told her to say something like "pay up on the bet" for that piece and altthough she didn't use those exact words Chris still came out with it!

That's all I've got on the matter.

'How Soon Is Now' and 'What Difference Does It Make' must be easy enough to slot into doing what we can to help our wildlife?

Or how's about him looking into the camera and giving a message to Bill Oddie about how his three weeks have went:

'William, it was really nothing'.

Please see post 77 ;)

Indeed - I was still on page 3 while you folks were on page 4 :)

For me, the Springwatch Smiths Bingo is more interesting than the show itself - it certainly beats staring boredly into the same nests we see night after night.

Springwatch is surely aimed at introducing people to the wonders of nature in Britain. I often read rather snide comments from existing birders and nature-lovers (not necessarilly here, but in many different places). It's as if they believe Springwatch should be for them.
I say, Springwatch is there to top up their love of nature, but more importantly, to introduce youngsters (and adults as well) to the diversity of their natural surroundings.
The show is a real joy. I take immense pleasure from seeing the presenters enthused by a subject they love.
I personally don't care how many times we see the swallow nest or the reed warbler nest. It enthralls me, and entertains me.
And most of all, I'm completely gutted that I didn't spot the Smiths references.

I am a " youngester" the show isnt just for adults. I like the show even ifit is a bit "adulty". If you are a birding expert and you made snide comments( see above at Ragtimes post) well if you want something more for experts why don't you become an orithlogist or naturist or something! Maybe you could make your programme and post it on youtube.*

There's been some excellent footage on this years springwatch...particularly the gos's and of merlin hunting in earlier episode. Packhams okay...except that i can't get Jools Holland out me head when i watch him...!

ps...don't know if anyone's mentioned this before...but are any of you aware that..allegedly....the springwatch camera team have caused the 'odd' nest to be deserted...? [have heard this from a reliable 'source'...not making it up]!

Kate Humble is really starting to annoy me.

Whenever she is being serious she can't stop loudly eclaiming "Oh my, that's incedible!" and then when she's feeling silly she just rudeley stops the real experts from talking. I think they should kick her off the unsprung bit and just let Martin, Chris and Simon talk because unsprung would be good without her.
