Really striking painting Mark, as so many have said above. I've never seen one of your kingfishers but my guess is that you've really done him, and his setting, justice.

a little jewel in several ways, and striking colors.

for future reference when painting, it's good to have one source of light, the planes at 90 degrees to the light are the brightest. So if the grass blade is getting that much, the cattails would have a brighter side, and it would be congruent to have the bird lit the same direction...When I have to figure this out in 2d, I think of my bird as a sculputure( that should be easy for you ) and how the light from a source may fall on it. If you choose a more complex light with reflected sources, there will still be one light that is stronger.

I don't mind the out of focus bg, the camera has taken over our visual world that way, and it does make life simpler.

Really well done, Mark! You certainly conveyed a personality of the species - even though it's not one I'm directly famiiliar with, it struck me right away as being right for the bird. Reminiscent of several of our thrush species in my area.
