Jos, I think you may be misunderstanding the point. First of all, the last thing my wife, or I would want would be for me to accompany her shopping in exchange for birding. The balance is a balance of the things that I enjoy, like bike riding, stamp collecting, travel. For example, in the late 80's as I got into bike riding, I became very much into following the Tour de France. It wasn't yet televised in the states, but as the years went by, my wife's interest grew as well. In 95, we were in France and had a memorable day in Paris as Indurain won his 5th tour. Now we both look forward to July and watching each stage on the tube. The point I'm tryin to make is that I'm lucky enough to have a partner whose interests overlap with mine, and it just requires me to be a bit less single-minded about it. That's really a lot less dismal that it may sound to you. By the way, enjoyed your blog's descriptions of birding in NYC. I grew up in the area, have spent hundreds of days in the city, never birded there, and hope to have the opportunity at some point. It's one of the reasons I'm so excited about birding, I'm able to re-visit all these places I've been with a new perspective. Veagle
