In the mid-nineties we had a stringer who had been caught out by Worcestershire Birders so started on Warwickshire & was seeing Cranes & Purple Heron, then he claimed a Caspian Tern at Draycote which dragged in 50-60 people from all over the Midlands even Lee Evans from Bucks. I heard later it came to blows with the known stringer & after that he just disappeared off the scene, another one Dave Hursthouse told me about was a bloke in Notts who made models of birds & tucked them under his hedge & took crappy photos of them, then tried to pass them off as rare birds. Back to the Calandra Lark when I arrived the next morning I was surprised to only see a handful of birders present instead of the 3-400 I would have expected for such a rare bird, but most people knew who the finder was & knew his reputation as a stringer & just didn't go. I dare say the bloke is a nice guy as the 2 I have known for nearly 30 years are, I have been birding with them both many times & down the pub as well, but I just wish they would stop the stringing as they are both competent birders, but they seem to think they have to be that bit better than the rest of us. Mike.
