I thought I'd arm me self with the info as there was mutterings of Cretzschmar's and Grey Headed... must admit I'd not even heard of Grey Headed till I opened the page in Collins! No debate on the interweb yet so guess eveyone is happy with the I.D. as stands...

Good morning at Minsmere today, with two Whinchat in vegetation on East scrape as well as a Green Sandpiper. Very little water though so south and west hides were better for waders. 5 Spot shanks at south and 2 little ringed plovers at west.

Then got back to the visitor centre and saw Ferruginous Duck at Island Mere on the board! Unfortunately a juvenile, but saw it briefly on the far side just in the reeds.
Not a first though after seeing a winter bird at Mins a few years ago.

Norfolk Trip Report/Photos, 20th August

Hi all

I know this is not Suffolk but as it's nearby I thought some of you may be interested in a short report and photos from a half-day in Holme and Titchwell last week:

http://www.surfbirds.com/blog/spain...Norfolk:+absence,+the+heart+and+all+that.html

After not visiting East Anglia for almost two years it was very exciting to be back and I had the best day's birding in a long time, despite spending much of my time in Spain now.

All the best

Visited North Warren and Thorpeness this morning.
Little at North Warren apart from a single Green sand and a Tern, probably a Common but too distant to say for sure.
Then went to some bushes near Thorpeness on the sea, not sure what the area is called.
Lots of activity here as blackberries, elderberries etc fruiting. Several Willow Warbler, Whitethroat, a couple of Lesser Whitethroat and a Garden Warbler were feeding.
Highlight of the day though was a female Redstart, a beautiful and unexpected migrant!

Without habitat, there is no wildlife. It's that s
Didn't see it this morning, but I did hear that it was seem later on when I was near the west hide, Osprey flew over, Bittern came up fight in front of Island Mere hide, Hobby made a low pass across the Mere, it was very windy this morning so most birds were taking shelter

Minsmere yesterday produced some great birds, none of which were seen by me! See my blog for further details. Gonna try Levington and Landguard today. My time off is running out!
Cheers,
Jim.

Arrived at Landguard this morning to find the Arctic Warbler had just been re-trapped! The beauty was bought down to the assembled few, couple of snaps taken and the bird was released again. It was watched preening for around 20 minutes, after which it zipped into thicker vegetation and became elusive. Cracking bird! Full account and pictures to come on my blog.
Called in at Christchurch Park on the way home and saw 4 Mandarin, including 1 Female.
Cheers,
Jim

Hi Jonny,

Good luck -still being seen through the day so you should be ok.

I went 1st thing this morning before work, a short wait when it was found with a brief view in brambles. It flew in to Holm Oak where we picked it up again when it flitted in to a small shrub and we had good views while it dispatched a caterpillar.

Well done Jim, indeed it is a cracking bird. I see you got the Mandarins at Christchurch Park, they've been scarce there this year, with Holywells Park a better bet but seem, post breeding, to be back at Christchurch.

I remember seeing Arctic Warbler at Fagbury back in the 90's(probably). Whatever happened to that place, it had rarities every other weekend back then (or so it seemed) but haven't heard it mentioned in years.

Where is this Fagbury? Mentioned by a good few at the Arctic twitch this morning.
Gi, I was pleased to get the Mandarin, didn't realise they had been scarce this year. Have they bred anywhere in the Ipswich ponds and lakes this year? One chap at the Arctic informed me last year was a bad year for the Christchurch birds, can't for the life of me remember the reason, I would guess at bad weather.
Cheers,
Jim.
