Trimley Marshes SWT - Spot Crake

Hi All,

Superb evening at Trimley yesterday.

In excess of 50 sp's during our short visit. Undoubted highlight was Spotted Crake which eventually showed v well 18.35 thru till 19.00.

Looks to be an adult male to me - as such it could be moulding out & present for some time - good news for those yet to go:t:

Other highlights: ml Marsh Harrier, v showy Water Rail, juv LRP, 3 Little Stint, Greenshank, Curlew Sand & Cetti's.

Only we 3rd visit to the reserve & 1st accessing it from the car park. It's blinking miles away! It's like the lock & key Felixstowe peninsular don't wanna share their birds;)

Cheers,

Jonny

Needham Mkt patch - 1st redwings of Autumn

Hi All,

11 Redwing circling over the patch this AM seeping away.

Also, lots and lots of common migrants with Chiffchaff's, Blackcaps and Robin's plentiful.

Attached a couple of pics taken while observing the ringing last week - the ringers were very patient and I even got to hold me 1st bird! A fm Blackcap :king:

Cheers,

Jonny

There appears to have been an arrival of migrants this afternoon in the north Suffolk area at least. At Gunton just North of Lowestoft, at least a dozen Bramblings with chaffinches, Lots of Robins, Song Thursh going over with the odd Redwing, Reed buntingss and Meadow Pipits along the disused railtrack. There was also a Ring Ouzel, Pied flycatcher and a C. Redstart on the pitch and putt course all newly arrived.

Shame I havent got tomorrow off work!

Hi Birdman,

Definitely a visible fall at Sizewell yesterday afternoon too.

There was thrushes dropping in ahead of the weather setting in the whole time i was there. Mostly Blackbirds, but also good numbers of Songies and Redwing and a single Ring Ouzel too (see record shot attached).

No sign of Wryneck, but another birder onsite said it was flushed about 1pm... gutted :-C

Cheers,

Jonny

Hi all

Been neglecting my patch of late, as been in Norfolk mostly.

However, a walk between Melton and Woodbridge produced a nice surprise on the shape of a Pied Flycatcher. It was in trees next to the antiques place near the railway crossing, buzzing between the aspen and a eucalyptus.

Not too many other birds of note, just The following:

whitethroat 1
blackcap 1 juv
chiffchaff 2
goldcrest 2-3
bullfinch 1 imm male
siskin 4-5 overhead

off out to sea, but hope a few more goodies are found.

Cheers

Sean

Ill bump this rather innactive thread to inform you we are getting decent conditions incoming with easterlies forecast for a number of days. Tho it does seem only maybe 4 regulars use this thread compared with hordes on the Norfolk one...come on boys sort it out:)

Needham Mkt patch - vis mig...

Hi Cortonbirds - the inactivity on here is incredible, especially compared with the Norfolk thread... its not like Suffolk doesn't get the birds!

Us Suffolk birders must be more voyeuristic than our Norfolk counterparts!

Good movements over me Needham Mkt Patch this morning, with Blackbirds, Songies and Robins in abundance as well as plenty Redwing and Mips over.

Finch numbers are also increasing with the highlight a single Brambling over - a patch 1st :t:

Back in the Brecks I had a Honey B over L'heath last Sat and clinched I.D. of female Ferruginous Duck at Lackford on Sunday. A friend originally got on the Fudge but was only afforded obscured views - I managed to pick it up again later arvo and it revealed all!

Belter Breck bird and showed well again yesterday evening :king:

Cheers,

Jonny

Just got back from the North Sea and there were 1000's of thruses off of E Norfolk. Most birds were heading SE initially, but as winds turned more easterly they were headed SW.

If there is fog or drizzle might be ideal conditions next few days.

Sean

PS we had a Yellow-browed on the boat and Long-tailed Skua chasing Goldcrest ..almost
making up for the birds I've missed in Suffolk/Norfolk in the past week :)

agree we need more voices on this thread

Hi, all.

Does anybody know of a currently-reliable location for waxwings in the Beccles-Lowestoft-Minsmere area?

(Please forgive me if I do not respond - my internet connection is highly erratic, and usually-reliable sites are timing out.)

I don't think there is such a thing as a reliable waxwing site in the area.
The best advice would be to keep an eye on the bird news pages at the Lounge Lizards site (http://home.clara.net/ammodytes/) for the Lowestoft area, and the BINS site (http://www.freewebs.com/suffolkbirding/october2010.htm).

Thanks, Stuart.

Unfortunately, my internet problems won't let me open those pages :-(

(Time to furtle about in my cache settings, I think...)

There was a report of Waxwing at Gorleston today, as well as a bird at Sparrow's Nest Gardens in Lowestoft.

They won't settle for a while, so worth checking berry-laden bushes in your local area until some settle down in one area.

Sean:)
