I can tell you this......the birds have found my feeder!! The traffic during the day now looks like rush hour on the 405. I am seeing finches like I never knew I had in the neighborhood. Some are coming in repeatedly from the north side of the house, and some are coming in from the south side of the backyard. Word has definitely gotten out that the buffet is open for business!! I will put a tally up later, but I wanted to note that I am having a ton of fun with my daughter trying to take 15 minute stretches here and there to identify and count birds. We are up to 22 species now since we have seen both a Hairy and Red-Bellied Woodpecker. There are some new pics on my Flickr account, including one of a Chickadee that is my current favorite shot. I have several pairs of House Finches where I only saw a straggling male hanging with the Goldfinches. He would come and go, but now he has brought in about 5 (two male and three female) that sit and fight over spots on the feeders. Too fun! The Goldfinches are now up to three pairs. Yes, I have officially seen 6 at the feeders and perch wires simultaneously to verify. I only assume these numbers will grow next fall and winter. I can't wait. Once this gets out of control, I may root for my Grackles to come back a little to scurry everyone off for a bit and give the hole in my feeders a chance to stop leaking seed...lol. Who'd a thunk? But, what I am really waiting for is the chance to move my feeding station further out from the trees (once the birdies are completely addicted 8-P) and set up some better perches for waiting birds. That will lead to better and better photo ops for me. I am getting them used to me a little at a time, so none of this should be a problem. I am hoping, though, that this isn't a temporary thing since it has been raining for four days straight. I don't know enough yet to know if this is just supplementing the soggy food sources or not. We'll see on Tuesday (when it's finall supposed to dry out) if the birds keep coming or vanish for a couple days. I'll put a tally in another time. Till next time...
