Ahhh, finally, the first visit to the feeder by a Blue Jay. As you know by now, the bird buffet is really rolling. Spring and fledglings must have a lot to do with the sudden spike in activity. I know Goldfinches, here in the states, are late breeders, but House Finches must be like all the others when it comes to breeding and timing. These are actually the first fledglings I have noticed coming along to the feeders. They don't know that begging no longer pays off yet, but they do sit and watch as mom and dad hop around between the nyjer and sunflower feeders. However, all my finches suddenly disappeared again. I haven't noticed any for 2 days. But, I know they will be back again, so I am not stressing over all the rookie things like spoiled seed, etc. Mourning Doves are coming in by the droves, and Grackles are still a bit of an issue. My seed stash seems to have a nice leak in it now. Yesterday, one of the Mourning Doves was on the Nyjer feeder (small tray on bottom) and eating Nyjer seeds. Hmm, who knew? Hang on..... I just saw a male Am. Goldfinch fly in. It is 1pm now, I will do a 5 minute count for you. 58F and cloudy (rained 1/2 inch this morning). Am. Goldfinches..6..2 male/4 female House Finches.. 5.. 3 male/2 female Tufted Titmouse..2 House Sparrow..5.. 1 male/4 female (hard for me to distinguish from female house finches) Mourning Dove..3 Black-Capped Chickadee..2 Northern Cardinal.. 2 (however, I often see three with the males chasing each other around) Common Grackle..1 Of course, that bastard just chased off all the finches at about the 3 minute mark. However, the Chickadees and Titmice aren't scared at all. Not bad for 5 minutes. That one even surpised me. Apparently, the Finches are all roomates and come and go together now. And, now my lunch is over. Back to the honey-dos....lol.
