Surrey VC Yearlist 2010 by Kojak (1 Viewer)

Walton Reservoirs 26/07

145 Common Scoter (Melanitta nigra)

A text from Dave Harris had on my toes from Beddington with Dodge to land another yeartick. For Dodge this was a life tick. Thanks Dave.

This is my highest total for Surrey at this stage of the year... I am on target to beat last years total.

148 Marsh Tit (Poecile palustris)

A trip with John Allan and T Bros in search of Hawfinch produced a yeartick but we were unsucessful on the Hawfinch front. A Silver Washed Fritillary was a new addition to my short Butterfly list.

158 Common Quail (Coturnix coturnix) :king:

A text from John Allan had me running from my girlfriends house to firstly collect my car then arrive at CHF to news of its not been heard since 0810. A few Beddington birders joined the finder Devilbirder in a stake out which lasted all day. The bird was heard again at around mid-day but was proving very elusive getting within a few feet of observers without being seen. As numbers dwindled John Devil and I went into stealth mode watching a path. The bird came out of the scrub briefly changing its mind when it saw us laying low. The bird was not seen again but was heard further up the field.

164 Sandwich Tern (Sterna sandvicensis) :king: o:D

Another early start in low cloud had Dodge (Roger Brown), Badge (John Allan) and myself staking out the lake when we all heard the terns but could not immediately find them...panic!... They dont stay long!.... But they (2) were picked up on the far side of the lake. Celebration followed which even raised half a smile from Badge!! This species completed my two Surrey target birds for the year the other being Turnstone and takes me to 199 on my Official Surrey VC Life list...
The picture is the best of a bad bunch. Dodge had the best shots....

165 Northern Gannet (Morus bassanus) :king: o:D

Sometimes you make your own luck....... A non eventful day at the Farm 6 - 3pm which produced a Wigeon and a Dunlin as newcomers. Saw the three amigos (Dodge Badge and myself) depart the Farm. However news of Gannets had been circulating with news of them along the Thames. Messages to Badge followed by a phone call from Dodge and a text stating Pinpoint Pete Alfrey was at the Farm had me returning Dodge's call..... "Get ur **** in gear we are going back to the Farm". I picked Dodge up and had a strange desperate urge to get to the Farm. We met up with Pinpoint and stood on the Sand Martin bunker. We had not been there ten minutes when Dodge exclained "Lads ive got three Gannets here". There they were coming straight for us.....Stay calm get my camera and fire away...... This suprisingly happened in that order and several shots were taken (one below).....Then the famous "Wooooooo hooooo!" echoed across the Farm.. A bit of texting and a few handshakes later and Kojak was dancing about like a madman..... My 200th Surrey tick and what a one to get........ Fantastic!!!

This is what birding is all about !!

(-) Eurasian Treecreeper (Certhia familiaris) o:D

Weather forcasts were predicting perfect conditions at the Farm today. Another early start was in order. I arrived at the Farm at 6.30am one problem no wind! After a muddy visit to the lagoons I soon realized that it wasnt going to happen today.

I suggested to John "Badge" Allan that we go looking for Coal tits / migrants along the path. We found a mixed tit flock in the oaks in the bikers field. The area has always looked good for Treecreeper but having searched the farm for 29 years John had not seen one. This species can be found in Beddington Park and Mitcham Common but has a habit of avoiding the Farm.

As I looked through the trees I saw a brown speckled backed bird with white underparts climbing the bark.. I had a double take moment and then lost it... "Treecreeper Its a treecreeper!!" It climbed the bark and moved around the back of the tree... John had not seen it a few tense moments followed then the bird re appeared on a short stumpy branch.....

29 years and it was in the bag I was delighted..... News was circulated a celebratory cigar was lit by John and we walked 100 Acre returning to see the bird again approximately an hour later. More texts and a few regulars attended adding this rare bird to their lists.

Fantastic!! My third Beddington tick in just over a week...
