PS I keep trying to turn my chestnuts into dark chestnut without success. I'm pretty sure that some of the 'dark chestnuts' on the Polish website
http://www.lepidoptera.bai.pl/start.php?lang=UK
are mis-named. Does anyone agree?
Ken

One on bottom left is decidedly dodgy...

I'm sceptical about at least 50% of claims of DC. I keep on banging the same drum, but it's not accepted in Hants without good photo or specimen.

Just had a couple of nights in N Devon. Not a lot to report but I did see a clouded yellow, a Nov. moth agg and a rusty dot pearl.

The variety of moths has tailed off noticeably now. I had lots of November moth agg last night but the only other species were chestnut, red-green carpet and E postvittana.
This one was exceptionally strongly marked:

Hi Ken,

Don't you fancy having a go at "examining" your November Moth aggs, apparently it's not too difficult! Who knows, you might move on to gen. det-ing micros before you know it ;)

Charly.

thanks for the thought, Charly.
Somehow gen deting micros doesn't appeal. Call me squeamish but I'd rather leave it to my CR!
Cheers,

As we seem to be in for a cold spell, I ran the trap last night. Not many moths but 2 bricks were new for the year. There was an Udea ferrugalis (first one I've managed to photo in my garden this year). Nothing else much of note except a late rosy footman, a 'white' satellite, and a couple of feathered thorns.

Fourwings

New member
Just spent a very enjoyable half hour or so reading this thread, it is both highly informative and great to read.
After the frost they give for mid-week I doubt any of us will be getting much in our traps.

Steve.

Ken Noble
Hi, Steve. Is the fourwings a reference to your interest in moths?? Edit - no, I see you are into Odos
Glad you enjoyed the thread. I learn from it too - mainly from my mistakes!
It has been a strange year for footmen, as you will have gathered. Not only have I had seven hoary footmen (almost unknown in Surrey until a couple of years ago) but I had a very late buff footman (28th Sept) as well as the late rosy.

The variety of moths will diminish now, for sure. But I'll probably put the trap out from time to time on milder nights.

Not quite so cold this evening so I ran the trap till bedtime. One new for year (sprawler - bringing my garden year list up to 339 approx) and one new for autumn (mottled umber x2) was my total catch!

It was much milder last evening, with slight drizzle. It brought in a better catch than recently, though still not spectacular.
December moth (new for year)
sprawler
red-green carpet (2)
Nov. moth agg (2)
feathered thorn (3)
satellite

Plus a micro that looks like S lacunana to me.

Statistics

As there was nothing I wanted to watch on TV this evening, I did a few quick counts of my garden moth list (which now totals 426 with one or two of them awaiting final confirmation.)
My maths doesn't quite add up, but on a quick calculation, the no. of new species added each year to the garden since we moved here is as follows:
2003 2 (before I had a trap)
2004 247
2005 86
2006 75 (44 micros and 31 macros)

It doesn't prove anything except that it is worth persisting (especially if you don't trap all night every night).

I wish I had time to go through all the micros - your lists sound more impressive then. Surprised you didn't have more macros new this year. I added 54 new macros and most of them were during that hot spell in July.

What did your macro year list end up on mine turned out to be 244 which i'm quite impressed with seeing as though its only a tiny little garden in the middle of a town.

I'm determined to get into micros next year (now i've mastered the basics of pyrals) - probably with a lot of help from the members of this forum.

Paul: My 2006 garden moth list for the year so far is as follows (copied off spreadsheet -there are some duplicates). I didn't add all that many macros, it's true, but I hope to add more next year!

Heart moths a bloody good moth to have is it not - is there a population locally to you do you know?

Ken Noble
I believe that heart moth is a RDB species.
Of those on my list, scarce silver-Y was a 4th record for Surrey and two of the micros were equally rare.
