Sutton Park (1 Viewer)

Today's

New species 6.30 Powells Pool- Common Tern

Thought had Red Kite that had me running through woods to confirm but missed it. Seeing one Sandwell going east makes that miss even more frustrating!!

Of note:
Cuckoo still Longmoor
Fledged GCG and Greylags on Wyndley Pool
4 Mute Swan cygnets Longmoor Pool
Possible 2nd Kestrel territory (not sure if Longmoor pair wandering; how big are their territories I wonder?)
10 singing Garden Warbler
Many Linnet across the site with 15+ displaying/singing Meadow Pipits
A dozen or so Whitethroats
Fledged Grey Wagtail at dam at Powells Pool
Fledged Song Thrush
Good pop of Greenfinches along Rowton Bank which is encouraging.

Still hoping for Hobby, Spotted Fly and Lesser Whitethroat. Maybe just Autumn migration?

Lesser Spotted WP

I'd thought one would be seen eventually.
The extensive woodland and wet Carr areas seem suitable but seeing one unless you knew where too look is a great chance encounter. I will keep looking!!
Does anyone know if Nightjars have been seen in the park/heaths? Also perfect habitat for LEOs.

Garden ticks

2 new garden ticks today;
2 Common Tern over to the west at 7pm
1 Nuthatch over calling at 7.10
Total garden purple patch!
40 spp since Jan 15

Tree Pipit

Tree Pipit apparently seen in Sutton Park yesterday (5th) and prior to this.
Does anyone/observer know where? Lots of display flights of Meadows but I'm yet to see Tree Pipit. Any info gratefully received. Thanks

Marsh tit

Marsh tit seen on 16th as was Tree Pipit again- is anyone aware of where?
Important spp record for West Mid region this time of year

Marsh Tit

Hi
Yes Birdtrack has it down for 16th
I've searched and searched for Tree Pipit. Fairly sure it's confused with Meadow Pipit for which there are lots territorial/displaying.
Nearest Marsh Tits probably Belvide area/Cannoch Chase
Frustrating!

A pram-push in and around Blackroot Pool around midday produced a Common Tern (wonder where the nearest breeders are), family parties of Coal Tit and Grey Wagtail, Kingfisher, Buzzard and a female Mandarin (first time I have seen a lone bird in the park). Plenty of Blackcap and Nuthatch in the woods plus one Garden Warbler.

Common Terns are breeding at Forge Mill Lake, Sandwell Valley, but no guarantee that's where these birds are from. The Forge Mill birds seem to feed regularly on Swan Pool. Maybe there are another pair in the area on an unrecorded site?

Cheers

Today's Mega!

2 new species today (not been for a while)
Incredibly my first House Sparrow!!! 1 female in bush edge of Powells Pool then flew to Miller and Carter. Rarer than Ring Ouzels so far!
Also female Mandarin Duck Blackroot Pool

11 + Common Tern on Powells Pool this morning, inc 2 + juvs being fed (though not bred here). Often on the Sea Cadet boat or buoys.
Also 1 Siskin over there

Good day birding yesterday at Sutton Park sightings include
5 shoveler at Longmoor Pool
2 juv green Woodpecker on ground near Longmoor Pool
3 Whitethroat and 2 wood Warbler near crown plantation
2 more juv Green Woodpecker near the Visitor Centre
4 Cormorants in Wyndley pool
And finally a Treecreeper in a pine tree near Wyndley pool
