Hi!

I've been birding for 10+ years and recently decided to upgrade to better binoculars. Note that I'm quite a beginner when it comes to manufacturers, models and technical specifications so apologies in advancce for my novice questions. Since I wanted to test and feel the binoculars irl, I visited an optics store in my hometown. They didnt have that many models available, but I did test different Zeiss and Steiner. I also stumbled upon a pair of Swarovski SLC 10x42 Hablicht WB - sold new for 1200€ - and I am quite curious about your feedbacks:
  • from what I could read about this model, it is from the 1990s. are there any technical changes in swarovski's that would make such an 'old' model uninteresting for the price asked?
  • anything that I should be aware of when testing the model?
  • any general feedback about the model?
  • are there any other models of other brands that are considered better for outdoor birding in the 1000-1300€ price range?
  • will it be difficult to find replacement parts eg eyecups for such an old model?

It wasn't easy to find the exact model that the store has for sale, but I think it is the one in the below ads:

Thanks in advance for your feedbacks!

Martin

Welcome to Birdforum. This SLC is still a decent bin by today's standards but no more; even if it's new old stock, €1200 seems exorbitant except perhaps to a collector. Pre-owned high-end bins are generally still repairable and worth considering, and if you had found the newer (2010) version it would be more compelling. Conquest HD is a popular choice brand new in your price range, but individual taste varies so it would be a very good idea to visit a store with more selection. What is your current bin, and how are you hoping to improve on it?

Hi Martin,

The original SLC x42 was manufactured from 1992 until 2010. It was then replaced with an all new design that was available until to the end of 2020.
For an idea of the main differences see: Swarovski 8x42 SLC ?

And in terms of external identification:
SLC x42's.jpg

From left to right:
the 3 versions of the original model's rubber covering;
the 4th is all the new model of 2010 with both rubber and exposed metal, and; the 5th is with the revised 2013 all over rubber covering
(although the image gives the impression the most recent covering is two toned, that's not so).

John

p.s. The new version of the SLC x42 is no longer offered by Swarovski. However, it's still manufactured by Swarovski
and is available with a different covering and markings from Kahles as the Helia S, see: New Kahles Helia S 8x42 and 10x42 Models
Kahles is owned by Swarovski.
