An Emerald Dove, a Zebra Finch, a Whistling Duck and a White Tree Nymph.

I took these at Tropical World in Leeds.

The lens surround of my SX40 came loose causing the rest of the camera to plummet. the camera is away being repaired. I wonder if anyone else had had the same problem. Lens surround seemed to only be glued in place.

Don't quite understand how it broke. Looking at mine I'm not sure where it's glued. Can you take a photo of the dead camera and attach?

Sorry to hear about your camera problem Speckled Wood and hope that it is resolved to your satisfaction. I'll be interested to know if any more owners suffer the same problem.

Just as a matter of interest which camera case are people using for their SX40HS?

Couple of Kentish Plover pics attached, taken from about 12 feet.

Thanks to all your recommandations & experience, I've bought the SX40 as well and must say I'm pleased with the results it gives me. I used it mostly for bird ID shots and it is just perfect for such. Havnt had the opportunity to use it in good lightning but even so, it delivers! In flight or close-up, it has become a trusted allied for me.

Many thanks to all of you for the tips given in this thread.

I would just suggest that I have been unlucky as there do not seem to be any other reports of the problem that have happened with my SX40. I am certainly not going off in a huff and blaming Canon, I am just waiting eagerly and hope to get my camera back reasonably quickly.

It is worth reading Roy C's comments about the effective maximum focal length actually being less than claimed when taking shots at less than 30 feet or so. This does not detract from the fact that this is an amazing little camera. The other point is that you will often find that the .4x or 2x digital zoom will often deliver better results than it should theoretically do.

Don't quite understand how it broke. Looking at mine I'm not sure where it's glued. Can you take a photo of the dead camera and attach?

I should have added that when the lens surround comes away it is shaped almost exactly like a lens hood. it appears to be glued in place internally so that the way it is fixed is not visible externally. I would not advise anyone to fiddle with it in order to try to find out how it is held in place, as whilst it will appear to "click back" in place it will come away again very easily, just leave well alone.

300 + meter shots 2x digital zoom

Stopped for a brief while at a lakeside nature park as it was a nice sunny day and above the freezing mark and little wind. The wife stayed in the car as she's not as excited about birding as I.

There weren't as many waterfowl nearby as I had hoped and most were 200+ meters distant. Scanning by eye there was some commotion near the far west shore where what looked to be Canada Geese. I then noticed a large bird circling and diving and through the sx40hs's viewfinder saw that it was a Bald Eagle.

I set the camera to 2x zoom as the Eagle was far away and thought to see what results could be achieved. All shots were handheld and through the viewfinder. The rear lcd display was useless in the bright light and trying to track the bird as it circled and dove was a real trying experience but what the heck I'm no quitter and took the challenge to at least get it in the frame.

When I finished taking some shots and thought it best not to try the wifes patience and started to head back to our vehicle saw a few other birders had shown up. They had one pair of bins and were discussing the Red Heads at least 200m offshore when I walked up. I pointed out that there was an eagle beyond where they were looking at the ducks. Took a bit for them to get a fix on the eagle and raised their level of excitement a notch.

A lady showed up with camera and telephoto lens and I briefly talked with her and again showed her where the eagle was and by this time it had landed in a tree. Discussed how maybe she could get a closer shot of said bird without trespassing and decided by now the wife was no longer to be kept waiting said goodbye to fellow birder/photographer and left.

These were a 1200x900 crop from the 4kx3k image then scaled to 984x738 sharpened and curve adjustment. Not the best images but at the distance they were taken they bring out detail you cannot see with the naked eye or cheap bins. Had fun with the camera though as it was easy to handle and carry.

Spent a bit of time trying to get record shots of the pale Redpolls that turn up at my feeders at this time of the year but have found it quite hard work - this is the best of the bunch.

The Harlequin I saw on a river in Reykjavík today, the first I've seen on fresh water this year - much easier to get close to than when they are on the sea.

Nice captures of the Redpoll and Harlequin, would love to see a Harlequin here in Michigan USA.

having great fun with my SX40, just perfect for what I need. Birds in flight, ID shots, etc. There is chromatic aberration, the viewfinder is the worst I've ever had but for the rest, it does the job without weighing a ton.

Peregrines at Norwich Cathedral with the SX40

Recent shots with my Canon SX40 showing the power of the zoom. Phot 1 is standard view from shooting position. Phot 2 is with full zoom and photo 3 is final cropped picture with a little sharpening.
