Hello everyone,

Birds seen in the Tarangire NP on the 15/08/19

1,2) Barrings on tail makes me think of Steppe Eagle but dates and short gap don't match
3) Tawny ?
4) ?
5) This one looks smaller, Wahlberg's ?

Thanks Valéry ! The bateleur is pretty obvious now that you say it, I didn't even realize that imm. were brown.

What pictures are you refering to for Wahlbergs and Tawny and could you give me some explanations ?

The 2 first pictures are Wahlberg's, I just remembered I've also a page about that one : https://valeryschollaert.wordpress.com/aigle-de-wahlberg-hieraaetus-wahlbergi/

Others are Tawny with long gape and vertical nostril ; only other similar eagle is Steppe Eagle, I assume August is too early for them as they winter in Tanzania from Asia.

Thanks for these inputs Valéry.

My field guide doesn't mention vertical nostril for Tawny and says "gape is short".

What made you say Whalberg's on the two first photos ? I thought they had "longuish narrow, square ended tail" (like the flight photo on your page)

Not quesionning your IDs, just trying to understand and get better :)

You will learn of lot of features not in books here. Compare the nostrils of your Tawny Eagle with my Wahlberg's on the page ; Wahlberg's and Spotted Eagles have rounded nostrils.

Your bird is also ""longuish narrow, square ended tail" and have 6 fingers.

Nice, informative, blog Valery:t:

It brings back sooo many memories from 40+ years ago when i spent 4 months hitching and birding around Kenya in days when i saw as much ‘game’ outside the Reserves and Parks as i saw inside and the birding everywhere was superb.
