Tayforth Birding (1 Viewer)

That is so sad to hear... been a bit busy this week, so haven't really been watching properly. Guess I caught the times when she was on the nest.

Oh my!! It's all happening this year, isn't it.

Do they have a camera on the nest?

Thanks Ian. I didn't hear that they'd installed them. Last news I had from there was that the Ospreys had moved to a new nest.

I must be really out of date as that seems to have been years ago now!!!

I don't think any of the ospreys visiting the nest site have been LM12.
She gave up and went and caught a fish for herself this afternoon.

Yeah.... when I posted that, I was just so excited at seeing two Ospreys at the nest. I didn't realise anything else was going on.

Terrific birding walking the Loch Leven heritage trail this morning. (4 hours, 28 minutes thanks for asking) :D
Warbler wonderland with chiffchaffs, willow warblers, blackcaps & sedge warblers every few yards. There were plenty whitethroats in the hedgerows along the west side of the loch and a fair few garden warblers near the pier. A lone grasshopper warbler reeling away also.
Apart from warblers there were a lot of snipe drumming & calling in the reeds just down from The Larder. Midge-agedon though, should have taken a hat/net thing.

Sound on!

Yeah.... I heard a few screaming this evening. Oh it seems a long time since I heard that row LOL

Seems a while since someone mentioned Sheriffmuir? Yesterday I did a repeat of a walk from last year starting in Bridge of Allan up via some woods and the golf course to Cooksburn Resevoir and on to Sheriffmuir. I go quite slowly birding along the way so by the time I got to the muir it was baking. There tends to be quite a few walkers setting off to Dumyat but once past them its quite quiet. Highlights along the way were Red Kite and Linnet then the expected stuff - Yellowhammer, Stonechat, Meadow Pipit, Skylark, Curlew, Whitethroat, Kestrel, Jay, Reed Bunting and some House Martins at the resevoir hut as well as good numbers of Swift and Swallow. Return is straight down the road emerging by the University - watch out as this is very narrow with high sides.
Did this walk again yesterday and was rewarded with my second sighted Cuckoo of the year (lone bird this time) and my third group of Tree Pipits of the year. Some superb parachute display singing from the Meadow Pipits and a Sedge Warbler near the Reed Buntings. There were several Ravens around Dumyat one of which flew close enough for me to see his 'beard'. There was a small flock of Linnets feeding by the verge and singing from the trees. Not quite as sweltering as last late June but very busy not just with walkers but the muir road had a fair bit of traffic on it.

Just seen a kestrel hovering above the stannergate at 21.40 first kestrel o have seen on Dundee for a while
I'm surprised you've not seen one for a while. There seems to be quite a few around in the city these days - almost like the pre-Buzzard days where they were the raptor species I'd see almost everywhere. There's a young male around the Law but I've had birds in various spots this year and last, including Stannergate, Eastern Cemetery, Carseview, RNP, Balgay Cemetery, Clatto, Middleton Wood....

I took a walk around the Loch Leven Heritage trail this morning. Main species targeted was Garden Warbler, although I heard one at a regular spot in Fife yesterday. Managed to see at least two with another couple heard.
In general, there seemed to be a lack of birds around the loch, and considering the trail is approx 13 miles long, my final list was modest at best. Apart from the Garden Warblers, only bird of note was a female Goldeneye.
Something else that stood out to me, was that I did not see a single butterfly, and insect activity in general was poor.

Took a trip towards Pitlochry and Dunkeld today.

A good few Lesser Redpoll on Moulin Moor above Pitlochry along the track, a female Siskin was also seen along with a Small Heath butterfly and a black segmented ground beetle larvae of some kind. Nice to have some sunshine and warmth for once.

Nuthatch heard in Logierait Woods along with other typical species. A dozen plus Sand Martin over Curler's pond, would've liked to have seen the rare Northern Damselfly which is found here but it clouded over. Did see quite a few large red damselflies in good numbers here.

2x Osprey at Loch of the Lowes, little on the water asides dozens of Canada Goose, a few Greylags and 2x Great Crested Grebe. Beautiful male Siskin, Yellowhammer on the feeders and a Treecreeper outside of the smaller hide which wasn't shy. Great Spotted Woodpecker flew over the Loch but didn't make an appearance on the feeders.

A brief look at Loch of Clunie, just Mallards, single GC Grebe and a pair of Mute Swans, a kestrel flew over the field to the east of the parking area.
