Tayforth Birding (1 Viewer)

A brief look at Reekie Linn Waterfall, not for the faint-hearted. Only birds of note here were 3x Grey Wagtail. Didn't see any Dippers here although they're supposedly present.

Loch of Lintrathen (western hide)
2x Greylag - 4 Goslings
2x Mute Swan - 4 Cygnets
28+ Mallard
1 Great Crested Grebe
28+ Oystercatcher
3x Grey Heron
1 Red Kite
1 Raven grunting and snorting around the Loch
1 Treecreeper
1 Spotted Flycatcher
1 Bullfinch
2 Siskin
3+ Chiffchaff
3+ Willow Warbler

plus usual woodland/garden birds

I don't do much twitching these days, preferring to stick to my patches, with the odd planned trip away. But this is a bird that I have wanted to see for a long time, so when one popped up in central Fife yesterday, I could not resist taking the half hour trip to see if it was still there this morning.

It was.

Oh lovely one Graham! I never got round to climbing Schiehallion, and it's too late now sadly.

You can't upload videos directly to Birdforum, they need to be hosted elsewhere. It would be great if you could add it to the Gallery as well, as we get very few images of Ptarmigan coming in, sadly. Just use the "Embed Media" icon.

Last night I had a first!! A skein of geese went over last night calling! It sounded like they do in migration, but I've never heard them at this time of year before. They were flying west over Blairgowrie heading in the direction of Dunkeld, so presumably going to roost on one of the 5 Lochs.

My niece who was outside saw them and thinks there were maybe about 30 of them.

Maybe Canada Geese? They come up to Scotland to moult in the summer. Alternatively, there are plenty of 'feral' (not quite the right word) Greylags around these days, so they might also be a possibility.

Thanks Barry.

I didn't think of Canada Geese, they're still not on my mind as they've really been so rare round here until the last couple of years. Plenty of Greylag around of course.

Today we went round by Little Glenshee. I've not been there for years. The footpath seems to have changed, no longer going up through the farm, but taking a new large stepladder over the fence a little short of the hairpin bend coming from Bankfoot. There's a small area to park on the opposite side of the road.

I presume it loops round to go through the glen.

Planning on nipping over this afternoon. Hope it stays a while longer!
When I dashed down on Wednesday evening when it was found I didn't expect it to hang around. It seems to be faithful to quite a small area between the castle and the harbour wall. At high tide it generally roosts on rocks directly below the cliffs west of the cannons - just where the railings switch to a stone wall.

That's pretty much where it was this morning. Seems pretty settled in the area, and was even driving off Redshank that encroached its space.

Mission accomplished. The tide was out so my pictures are rubbish (that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it :D)
It was pretty mobile so I had to re-find it a couple of times. There was also a common sandpiper and loads of turnstones.
At Guardbridge I lost count of the egrets and a greenshank was on the paper mill side of the river just downstream from the bridge.
Traffic was grim.

Got myself in gear this morning, and headed for Cameron Reservoir. I'm pleased to report that it didn't take to long to locate the visiting Spotted Sandpiper, which is my second lifer this year from that area. First was a Hen Harrier at the beginning of the year. Also saw 10 Grey Partridge (adult with young) on the church access road.
