I have heard of people having problems claiming for repairs with a mack warranty, by the time you take this out you'll be saving even less money.

I would not take out any extra warranty anyway, just bringing it to attention of others. I don't fill in any warranty on anything I buy until it goes wrong and sometimes it gives me more warranty time.

Here's a little story that happened to me about 10 years ago,
I bought a washing machine as I thought form J Lewis, it went wrong I went into the store, it was just over the warranty period and the girl was not listening or agreeing any of my request for leannesses in regard to the warranty, so I asked her to get the manager out, after a lengthy discussion he relented and said he would send round a replacement machine whilst mine was being repaired, all went well and the repaired machine was delivered working well, they took back the replacement machine, the next day I checked my receipt and too my amazement I had bought this machine at a different wholesalers, all I can say is thank you J Lewis, What I think has happened the manager thought the girl had checked all the receipts etc.

.
I cannot see how this would extend you warranty period as it is the date on your invoice that counts.
BTW I never fill out warranties anyway.

There some companys that will give you 2 years warranty as long as you don't fill your warranty in.

The duty for cameras, I believe, is absolutely nothing ! It is lenses that attract the VAT+ Import duty.

I have been checking this out, it seems that DSLR do not attract import duty but they do attract VAT. I suppose if you are photographer that pays VAT you can claim it back.

I would not worry about warranty, the chances of it going wrong in the 1st 12 months is slim,

Hmm. Did I not see a report based on a Which ? study which found consumer goods either went wrong in the first few months or lasted a very long time ?

Might be my memory ... might be a very small percentage ... but worth having the warranty. Extended warranties are a different matter.

There is company in HK that has UK office and if your camera goes wrong they will pay all the postage cost, they also state that the repairs under warranty could be done at any international repairers that Canon approve which could be in the UK.

The funny thing is there are a few company's in the HK that must move more camera equipment than all the UK put together, so they are not fly by nights, where did that saying come from. I do reiterate you must pay your VAT |=)|

I would doubt if you would be able to take to any authorised Canon dealer in the UK for a DSLR as they do not come with a international warranty like lenses. It states that the 7D comes with their standard warranty + a one year Local Hong Kong warranty.
I have read post's where they ask you to send to a local authorised repairer for evaluation and quote which you then give to them - If it is too dear they send to HG or if the quote does not categorically say it is a manufacturing fault they are reluctant to even pay for the repair.

I had my 40D repaired free of charge even when it was out of warranty, I wonder if it would have been the same if I had bought from someone like DR.

I guess at the end of the day it is up to the individual as to how much the possible hassle is against the cost saving.

I sent you a PM Roy, You have to remember the Far East is where they make the camera's, The far East is not that far away now in the global market place.

Again Roy all suppliers/companys dealing in the camrea epiqment have a good name to keep and if they did not perform they would be by the wayside hence diigitalrev have a good name.

Has anyone found a fix to allow the use of third party batteries and "still get a reading to show the charge that is left". Forunately I bought the third party battery with the camera so they refunded my money after trying there alternatives. When you use a third party battery the warning comes say that it is not recognised, the battery still works BUT you have no way of knowing the state of charge. Not very useful for a days shooting?

Also the third party ones must be charged on their own charger and not the canon one, hence I also have ordered a canon extra battery to go in the grip.

BTW I cannot say that on my 50d that I noticed any different battery information when I used non Canon.

Like I say, it is up to the individual. I personally would not support a company who make it all to easy to defraud our country. If you want to do it that is fine but please do not try to convince me as I am not interested.

Am I right in thinking that there is an option to buy items which are dispatched from their UK office and therefore have the VAT included?

The item will be shipped to you from our Hong Kong office. The item may be subjected to customs import tax/fee when it enters your country. By buying internationally, you are considered an importer. Therefore it is your responsibility in case there is some import tax/fee to pay.

I guess it is not so bad as those companies who mark items as Gifts to avoid VAT etc.

You can buy from them VAT payed 7d Camera in UK £1369. Also marking it as a gift does not exclude it from VAT its a myth
