Working on nature reserves out on the east coast of England certainly increases ones opportunities for finding rare birds, as I found out last year on Blakeney Point. Another season on another such place, this time the Farne Islands, has done it again, with some more stunning rarities popping up at my feet (dream job? It is for me :) Nothing really of note during a fairly slow spring; the other lads on the islands did better. I did manage a Quail and a Blue-headed Wagtail though, so not a disaster! The autumn however was absolutely incredible on the islands with self-found Black-headed Bunting, Lanceolated Warbler, Fea's Petrel, two Red Breasted Flycatchers, Bluethroat, Ortolan Bunting, Rosefinch, Red-backed Shrike, 4 Yellow Browed Warblers, Siberian Chiffchaff, Storm Petrel, Leaches Petrel, Grey Phalarope and 3 Cory's Shearwaters. Rediculous! I remember saying last year, after an excellent season on Blakeney Point, that I dont expect to ever exceed that year for finding rarities, with a 1st for norfolk and a couple of other good birds, but this year I have! It cant carry on, can it? Maybe with another season on the Farnes it will... JM
