We have been discussing Classic Porro Prisms so I thought I would bring this Thread back to life because it involves a classic galilean binocular used in a 1984 film. I wonder if there are any collections of these binoculars? Last night the TCM channel showed "A Passage to India." Like "The Bridge on the River Kwai" it was directed by David Lean. It was made in 1984 and is based on E.M. Forster's 1924 novel of the same name. The binocular in this movie is a particularly handsome Galilean model. It appears to be brand new with brown leather wrapped objective tubes and gold colored trim and ocular tubes. It has some size to it. Perhaps a 5 x 50? That seems to have been a common size for a galilean binocular. There was no center hinge. We are given one or two "views" through it. Not the usual horizontal "figure 8" view but one in which the center 1/3rd is somewhat narrower than the outer 2/3rds. It is carried by Judy Davis, who played the part of Adele Quested, when she visited the Marabar Caves with Dr. Aziz (Victor Banerjee) and Mrs. Moore, who was played by Peggy Ashcroft. It appears to have taken a bit of a beating after a bloodied Adele Quested rushed out of one of the caves in a panic and drops it. Dr. Aziz picks it up; it's leather strap is broken and there appears to be some cosmetic damage to the exterior.
