Just three more from yesterday.

More crackin' dragonfly shots from you too Ron.
That four-spotted chaser is interesting, if you compare it to other photos note the outer 'spots' are smudged rather than just plain spots. This makes it an individual of the form praenubila, uncommon rather than rare but the first I've seen since I was made aware of it. Nice one.

Hi Steve,
after seeing your cuckoo shots was going to put my camera away for a while. Grt photos.
A couple of shots today at Kibblesworth, Grayling and a snap shot of a female dragonfly laying at first thought it was a skimmer but looking closer it looks more like a B.B.Chaser which i've never seen at this site. What do you think. This was the only view i got as it moved away and i never saw it again. Other obvious option is 4spot but only 2 spots showing on rear wing.

A first?

Good call Michael, the fact it has antehumeral stripes (or braces as I prefer to call them) rule out four-spot and it's wrong shape and colour altogether for a skimmer. I wouldn't be surprised if it's the first BbC recorded there, which is surprising as it looks a perfect site for them being open and shallow. Excellent.

Edit: Just checked, apparently they have been noted here the last couple of years, news to me.

hi michael
yours and alans knowledge of dragonflys is much greater than mine, but i can say that bb chasers have been seen at the brick work pools in the past. good call anyway and nice shots, thought id bump into you again after the last encounter? no doubt i will soon.

new year tick?

new gateshead year tick for me? Green sandpiper x 2 at lamesley water meadows, also forgot to mention i had 2 lesser whitethroats at hagghill farm and a reeling grasshopper warbler at kite hill, derwent cp yesterday morning. When i arrived back home i was greeted by a grey wagtail on my driveway! Had them flying over a few times but never feeding on the drive.
Cheers
