Moorlands Macro: Close up and personal....with bug
I found 2 of these last year on a dead female blackbird, the ones I saw were more red in colour than your orange ones Steve.

I know these are Moles but what is this done for, the local farmer or someone else seems to be sticking these along the lane at Biddulph Moor WHY ?

Hope they have not been poisoned and a raptor or owl comes along and eats them. Not sure what they do it for but the farmer down at hawksmoor used to do it with foxes. I regularly saw 2 or 3 foxes strung up on the bridge.

I've just spoken to a colleague who resides on the Staffs Moorlands, and he tells me that the farmer has done this to advertise the fact that he's a proficient mole-catcher i.e. if you need some moles dealing with, I'm your man for the job!

Furthermore, my colleague says that he will not have used poison because this means that moles would die in their tunnels, so he must have been using humane trapping techniques...it's a whole new world out there that I knew nothing about!

yeah, I've noticed that too.

I guess you're aware of the National Butterfly count that's on at the moment?

Very few butterflies at Westport at the moment except for Gatekeepers which seem to be everywhere, also good numbers of Meadow Browns but very little else including Whites which are very thin on the ground this year

There are a few about in the right conditions, all these were taken over the past week at various locations in Staffs, including my garden.

Notice how the pictures of the whites are in shade instead of sunlight, the whites are known for this as they will still fly when the sun is not shining, the other 3 pics are in full sunlight.

Once Bittern, Twice Shy
Can anyone shed some light on this flutterby, seen at Brown End Quarry at Waterhouses?

Looking through my flutterby book, female Common Blue or Brown Argus? To make things more difficult, it had half a wing missing.
