Quick ID practice at the local park produced...

In flower
Garlic mustard, meadow buttercup, cuckoo flower, shepard's purse, common dandelion, ribwort plantain, daisy, and possibly common mouse-ear and a bitter-crest species too.

Not in flower but easily identifiable
Common ragwort, cow parsley, broad-leaved dock, and a vetch sp. possibly tufted.

No butterflies there, but had a peacock and large white in the garden this morning. The latter being my first of the year.

Recent moths at Coombes and Churnet.

Purple Thorn
Mullein
Hebrew character
Powdered Quaker
Water Carpet
Clouded Drab

Was hoping the weather was nice today so I could go Marshes Hill to see Emperor moth on May the 4th. Guess I'll have to wait for tomorrow; revenge of the 5th.

I think you'll be lucky if you see one Adam - it's so cold at present! Moth trap last night produced a grand total of zero moths!

Recent moths at Coombes and Churnet.

My girlfriend had a rather nice find this morning whilst walking through her farm on the edge of the Churnet.

Few pics of holly blue butterflies being posted on various online places. Anyone know of any good sites in the county for them?

My garden! They tend to like mature gardens and parks if there are, of course holly and ivy growing. Just need the sun to bring them out!

Greenhairstreak at Marshes Hill yesterday, along with Mother Shipton moth, but no emperors.

Also saw a lovely little wood mouse whilst doing the point counts at Coombes Valley this morning.

Run the moth trap first time last night, never going to get much living in a terraced house with no garden, anyway had two moths one got away and this one, is it a scalloped hazel, not sure.

Looks good for scalloped hazel to me (going purely from memories of last years trappings).

Beetles

On my visit to Cannock chase Tuesday, I saw a Beetle and thought it may be a Green Tiger Beetle of which species I am familiar with, however on closer inspection it was similiar in size and shape but differently marked, on checking my collins insect guide on arriving home it appeared to be a Wood Tiger Beetle. Searching the Staffordshire on-line Atlas it shows no records for this species for Staffordshire.

Seen area of SJ99556 17756. I did not take my camera and my mobile is no good on macro. I saw the same Beetle in North Warks the next day this species may be spreading north.

I have now received a reply from Beetle expert Steve Lane, he said Wood Tiger Beetle is only known on Southern Heaths, I asked Steve is there any similair common Beetle that looks like Wood Tiger Beetle, Steve answered no.
The only similair species is Dune Tiger Beetle which is Coastal, Looking at photo's of both Beetles on the internet the beetle I saw on the Chase matched Wood Tiger Beetle.

Looking at NBN gateway (link below), it does appear to be a very southern species (although I guess that not everyone gives sightings to NBN, so might be gaps in the data to some extent). But given the size of the leap the records suggest it would have to take, I'd be surprised if the county recorder accepted the record without either a photo or the specimen, unfortunately. Be interesting to see if any more sightings or photos come in.
