Fascinating. Rainton Meadows is on a bus route past my house. Might have to go and check that out next week. According to BWPi food items can include insects snatched above the head, although it does say they are of minor importance in overall diet. Interestingly it states females are more likely to take insects from the surface of the water than males. Grass snakes have been recorded as prey items.
