And the rest ... Fuente Dé / El Cable : We went up in the cable car on June 4th, in glorious weather: there was still some lying snow at the top. We didn’t walk far, only up to the Horcada de Covarrobres, where we were deterred by avalanche warning notices and snow up above the top of our boots. But we had a wonderful time. Griffon Vulture: three patrolling the cliffs on the way up. No other raptors were seen up here, a disappointment. Alpine Chough: all around the top cable station and the surrounding area. *** WALLCREEPER ***: superb views from an individual down at eye-level, no more than 40 metres away, just below the Horcada de C., at only about 1900m asl. Couldn’t believe our luck, never seen one before. Wow Wow Wow. I’ve always doubted the existence of this bird, having searched many times in many places. OK, it exists. Wonderful. Northern Wheatear: quite a few up here, including some in song. Snowfinch: four seen well, not far from the top cable station. Water Pipit: three including one in song. We did not see any Alpine Accentors although we met one chap who said he had, quite close to the cable station. However he didn’t seem able to id the Snowfinches so I do wonder. Extras: We took the car down to the coast one day, where the weather was mis. Found Yellow-legged Gull and Spotless Starling to add to the triplist, that’s all. Incidentally we found no starlings in the Deva Valley. On another day we drove over the Puerto San Glorio into Valdeon. The only birds added to the triplist here were White Stork and, somewhat surprisingly, Common Whitethroat (I’m sure they are there in the Deva valley, just didn’t pin one down though I thought I heard their song more than once). Oddity: one Eurasian (I’m pretty sure) Collared Dove came aboard the Pont Aven a good two hours out of Santander, and struggled to maintain a foothold in the wind caused by the ship’s passage. If it hung on then it would have ended up (back ?) in Santander. We saw no other Collared Doves on this trip. Missing: some species we didn’t find, probably through incompetence, or maybe they just aren’t there : Jackdaw, Crested Tit (obviously the conifer plantations here don’t appeal to this species), Long-tailed Tit, Iberian Chiffchaff. No doubt if I’d done any research beforehand I would have known not to expect them. All comments welcome.
