Birding since 2006!
Hi everyone,
I went to Cozumel last week - my first time to Mexico - and although I studied madly on the birds most likely to be seen on my trip, the flycatchers remain a difficult group for me when they are not singing. Still, I think I may have ID'ed two of them and have an idea about the third.
Bird #1. (three photos taken from a distance). I believe this is a Thick-billed Kingbird, but eBird is flagging it as rare and according to my field guide (Howell) this bird is found on the western slope of Mexico - not Cozumel (Punta Sur) where I photographed it. I've included three photos to show the bill shape, yellow belly and tail shape. I have little experience with southern kingbirds so confirmation or correction would be appreciated.
Bird #2. I think this is a Brown-crested Flycatcher based on the size of the bill and the tail colours (a black vertical line dividing a thin yellow line and a larger rufous area) as shown in the Howell guide.
Bird #3. I'm guessing (more like hoping) that it is a Northern Beardless Tyrannulet based on overall drabness of bird, lack of eyering, and the colour of underside of the bill. This is the only photo I have, unfortunately.
Confirmations/corrections appreciated!
