A cracking evening with a bright future for Tice's. Great to meet the two Davids from Hansons who were really positive about the future. Birds beforehand included 2 Green Sandpipers, 3 Little Ringed Plovers, 22 Lapwings, 2 Yellow-legged Gulls and at least 120 Lesser Black-backed Gulls. My first Meadow Pipits of the 2nd half of the year were encountered along with a number of Swifts, Swallows and Martins.

Last year's Curlew Sandpiper (7 Aug 10) rejected as it would have been too early for a juvenile. Bird guides are reporting 2 juveniles today in other southern counties just over a year later. Does make you realise why people refuse to send in reports.

First morning back after my foray up North last week, still good no's of Green Sands around, at least 6 noted around the workings & 1 Common. Pretty quiet otherwise, 17 Lapwing & just 4 Common Terns present, the highlight being a male Kingfisher showing well in the workings.

Was hoping for grounded migrants after the early morning rain but no such luck. In the workings were 3 Green & 2 Common Sandpipers, a juv LRP, the male Kingfisher, 14+ Lapwing, & an Adult Yellow Legged Gull. Remaining summer residents were 3 Sand Martin, 1 Reed Warbler, 4+ Chiffchaff, 2 Whitethroat, & 4 Swallow.
Also met David Brittain who advised that earthworks are due to start on the
5th of Sept.

Following the drudgery of having to look at Ruppel's Warbler, Syrian Woodpecker and Sombre Tit in Turkey I returned to Tice's with great expectations. Our travelling friend has two 'soon to be' French Horse Burgers wandering around the field which was a surprise as I thought he was told not to do it. 17 Lapwings present along with at least 4 Green Sandpipers, 1 Common Sandpiper, 2 Common Tern and the odd hirundine over. A Buzzard was flushed from the fence as I approached the viewing area and a number of Chiffchaffs were calling around the area. Rather disappointing really.

Not much to add to Rich's tally, our visits must have overlapped, I had at least 3 Common Sands in the workings & a Kestrel over the overflow pit but no sign of the Kingfisher today.

I walked in heavy rain this morning in the hope of finding a couple of grounded migrants. Nothing much to report out of the ordinary although all the waders had increased with 6 Green Sands, 2 Common Sands and 19 Lapwings. An adult Yellow-legged Gull was present amongst at least 10 Lesser Black backs. The western side of the main lake is beginning to fill up again which is encouraging.

Lovely sunny morning 06:30 - 08:00 produced min 6 Green Sands, min 4 Common Sands, 18 Lapwing, Kestrel, juv LRP, Reed Bunting, 2 Gadwall, 4 Swallow, Common Tern, 6+ Chiffchaff, & Kingfisher.

At last some more migrants! Nice adult Ringed Plover in the workings this morning along with 3 Green & 2 Common Sands, & the juv LRP. As I was watching the Lapwing flock in the workings a passerine flew over me & perched on the fencing, the second Whinchat of the summer! Great views as it actively fed & returned to its perch.

A six thirty to eight o'clock watch produced 5 Green Sandpipers, 1 Common Sandpiper and 17 Lapwings. Little else migrant wise but 5 Bullfinch were also present. Numerous Sand Martins over and Pied Wagtail numbers have increased on the workings. It is worthy of note that there at least 8 Roe Deer in the confines of the meadow and dragonflies hawking in the early morning sun were most likely Migrant Hawkers.

Rich H has some old photo's of the Kiln from the 1938. One shows a certain Walter Tice and his vans ready to deliver fruit and Veg. Tice's Fruit and Veg are clearly written on the side showing that the name Tice's Meadow clearly has merits.

An afternoon walk with wife and daughter produced no waders although there were two adult Yellow-legged Gulls amongst the Lesser-Black Backs. My wife says she won't be buying a season ticket to come often - bonus! ;)

Good to bump into you, Rich! Nothing to add to your sightings really. I thought I picked out the Yellow-leggeds when the entire gull flock headed skywards at c.17:30, so thanks for confirming my suspicions! ;)
The old boy I chatted to on the bank had some interesting memories of Tice's from his 50 years of living nearby, as well as tales of the birds of his youth oop north. Having said he missed "seeing birds like larks and lapwings", he seemed surprised/delighted when I pointed out the Lapwings flying about over the workings!

Quiet this afternoon with only two Green Sandpipers but a massive flock of some 350 Canada Geese. The Whinchats and Wheatears had sadly departed.

I see from Surrey Birders a report of a Bar Tailed Godwit yesterday, any know anything more about this?

They weren't there at 1800hrs! The total seems a little high for Barwits on an inland passage and Surrey Bird Club did not publish it on their recent sightings. Rich H had a possible juvenile Redstart along the embankment but we couldn't relocate.

Two Green Sandpipers this lunchtime and a new birder; turns out he was army so I have recruited him into the Army Ornithological Society! Bonus. 1 Hobby reported by said birder.

A local told Rich H that there had been a camera crew at Tice's today. Anyone see it on local tv?
