Barn Owl again tonight and in the rain . Is this because its hungry ? or knows it can get a meal.It was flying along hedgerow Low Lane and down along tree line towards mound resting on posts and in trees. Hope we can tick it on our new year list.

Just a quick thanks to Rich H for sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm with a rank amateur this morning! Not sure if you were still around when the goosander finally ventured across to the middle islands, that took my maiden Surrey year list to 99. Couldn't resist making a second trip later on and enjoyed the Barn Owl as a very stylish way to reach my century! Got a bonus closer view on my way back to the car when it flew from ground to fence post in the bottom corner.

Two reasonable visits today with a total of 35 species. The morning visit found 2 Egyptian Geese along with the usual waterfowl; Pochard (7), Shoveler (15), Wigeon (2), Tufted Duck (17) and Teal (9). Also 14 Cormorant and 4 species of Gull. Passerines were represented by Bullfinch, Meadow Pipit, Reed Bunting and a large flock of Long-tailed Tit. As Rich stated, cracking views of Barn Owl with it eventually perched adjacent to the mound and looking straight at us. Merry Christmas to you all.

A miserable, (weather wise) albeit enjoyable afternoon on the patch. Wildfowl numbers remain constant, as do Cormorants, but everything else seemed to be keeping its head down. The only consolation was an adult Yellow-legged Gull in amongst the Black-heads. Passerines generally were not present although I did see the odd Tit flock, heard a Reed Bunting and was overflown by a couple of Mistle Thrushes. Lets hope the weather improves and keep a look out for strange Pipits - two Buff-bellied Pipits at QMR now. Amazing.

Other notables were Teal (17), Tufted Duck (11), Lapwing (48), Shoveler (10), Poschard (12), Wigeon (4) and a lone Water Rail in the Reed Bed. Nearby Rich H and I had Dartford Warbler (3), Stonechat (4), Wood Lark (4), Goosander (9) and Kingfisher (1).

35 Waxwings still at North Camp Station.

Making my irregular visit to the Tice's blog and its great that so many good birds keep turning up. Its a nice friendly group and really good to take a peak now and then. Haven't been for a while but hope to get there before long. Cheers and happy New Year to all!
