The Common Scoter has departed and the Chinese Goose appears to have been eaten. Sean, the lucky man, had a fly through Little Tern just before lunchtime yeasterday. Some thirty minutes later one appeared at Fleet Pond and was surely the same bird.

Keep a look out for the Nightingale pair. We believe they now have young with one bird seen with food. I had a fly-past Nightingale which had come from the far side of the Blackwater - perhaps ranging further afield to find food.

Hope we can ring Tern and Blackheaded Gull chicks on tern raft next week. Trees planted and cattle fence in place. Think we have established high water level as it is now but no islands that would be good for waders.I expect Hansons to start pumping water out soon from plant yard. But dont think it will be very signifficant regarding main workings water level. Not a lot to report as of late apart from Nightingale 3 chicks and all the warblers doing well.

Notes required!

Gents, a gentle reminder that the following Tice's birds require notes to be submitted please:

Temminck's Stint
Snow Bunting
Red-rumped Swallow
2 x Spoonbills

There are probably more? Photos will suffice (eg the Temminck's shot in the Tice's report).

From my experience it's best to get them out of the way rather than let them build up or it becomes a bit of a chore.

Cheers
Dave

Chaps/Dave H,

Can we get onto this?

Temminck's Stint - we have a photo I believe.

Snow Bunting - finders were Kev Duncan and Dave B I think. Can one of you knock one up? Loads of us saw the bird if you need to add names of other observers.

Spoonbill - First bird has a photo (Sean Foote), 2nd was seen only by Dave Blinkman

Red-rumped Swallow - single observerer, Rich H.

A Wood Sandpiper was reported briefly by someone called Simon on Sunday morning. Kev, 2 Green Sandpipers were reported that morning. Were you there around about 0920hrs when the bird apparently flew off? Simon reported 1 other birder there at the time - was it you?

Suggest he was mistaken. Wood Sandpipers will be on the breeding grounds by now and Green Sandpipers can look similar at this time of the year. Dave Blinkman also said he saw one yesterday - both would have been the only Wood Sandpipers in England. When I was there latish afternoon 2 Green Sandpipers were certainly present - I left after a look around the margins due to chronic hay-fever.

Green Sandpipers have a short breeding period in the Boreal Forest with some individuals already returning - perhaps summer Wood Sandpipers are more than likely first year Greens. When I helped out on a wader reserve in Germany we used to get our first returning Green Sandpipers at the end of May - interestingly only a week after the last of this species moving north.

Return wader passage appears to have started. Rich H and Andy L reported 7 Green Sandpipers, 1 Common Sandpiper and a Common Snipe yesterday. Looking forward to getting down there this weekend.

Quiet this morning when I was down first thing, with 3 LR Plovers being the highlight, about 25 Lapwing spread around the edge of the workings and two Little Egrets. Otherwise just the expected species.
Good to see the water level still dropping since my last visit, first time the posts round the bike pool have been visible for ages !
