Yes, and Steph's tale of the bloke drawing a GSP bill when she had spent an hour drawing the one actually visible on the bird is instructive as well! Just thought of another one, a bit nebulous but cautionary in its own way: I was up in Scotland, Aberdeen area, winter. Freezing cold, previous day heavy snow had prevented us nailing a Snow Goose. We got the two Maryland ringed Canada Geese (parvipes) though. Fresh morning (too fresh!) we went after a drake American Wigeon on a small lake just outside the granite city. My mate found it, I couldn't get onto it. Not that I couldn't see the birds, I just couldn't pick the Yank Wigeon out. He gave me loads of repeats of directions, and eventually I figured I was looking at the bird. Still not 100% but OK, job done, off we went. A day or two later a local worthy visited, got close views and pronounced the bird a hybrid. Was that why I couldn't pick it out? - to me it wasn't sufficiently different from the European Wigeon it was with? Maybe. John
