Last nights storm blew down three of my feeders and another one, a pan that I set on the ground is completely missing. One of the downed feeders is broken and will have to be replaced. Oh well, I never liked that feeder anyway.

yea last night i purposely took down my squirrel baffle off of my feeder because i knew it would end up gone and my feeder broken. (even tho its already squirrel proof, i use it to keep the seed dry) Its still windy here on long island and really cold with the wind chill -__-

My neighbor two houses down the road and me had big flocks of house finches coming to our feeders in the past two days. Anyone in the same general area noticed this too?

Snow Storm Birds at the feedeer

We're just north of Boston and we had a snow storm on Sunday, about 10 inches of new snow. I couldn't believe the nonstop traffic at our feeders. We have 3 feeders with suet, crushed sunflower and whole sunflower. We had all these birds in about 1/2 hour.:

Juncos - 9 or so
Chickadees - 6
Titmouse - 6
Nuthatch - 3
Downy Woodpecker - 3
Red Bellied Woodpecker - 1
Mourning Doves - 8
Cardinals - 2
Hairy Wood Pecker - 1
Purple Finch - 1
Golden Finch - 4
Carolina Wren - 2
White Throated Sparrow - 1
Blue Jays - 3

Nice list, Tom. We had the same storm and our feeders were busy. The main species hitting the feeders (seven of them plus a water pan) are:
Blue Jays,
Dark-eyed Juncos,
House Sparrows with 18 -20 of each species
plus about double that many American Goldfinches
We also have the less numerous species including
Downy Woodpeckers
Hairy Woodpecker
Northern Flicker
Black-capped Chickadee
Common Redpolls
Common Raven
American Crow
A Sharp-shinned Hawk is making daily raids.
Last week we had
White-throated Sparrows
Song Sparrows but haven't seen them in the last few days.
There was a flock of Hungarian partridge feeding near the feeders.
Lots of activity.

Today at the bottom of the garden we had a pair of Red-legged Partridge for the first time, very happy about that. Seen them in the fields out the front of the house before so I suppose today they decided to seek refuge from the shotgun squad, probably the first and only time I'll actually be grateful to them. Had frequent visits from Tree Sparrows too.

Let you know as and when any more miracles happen. ;)

We are experiencing a winter blizzard here in Saint Joseph, Missouri. The weather man gave a forecast of 1 to 3 inches of snow, wind at up to 35 miles per hour and low temperatures to 20 degrees F.

Presently there is about 10 inches of snow on the ground (and it is still snowing), the wind is blowing quite heavily and it is 23 degrees F.

The birds are "attacking the feeders". They almost seem to be in a "feeding frenzy". We are getting House Sparrows, House Finches, Downy Woodpeckers, Red-belllied Woodpeckers, Dark-eyed Juncos (affectionately, called "Snow Birds"), White-breasted Nuthatches, Red-breasted Nuthatches, Carolina Wrens, Northern Cardinals and American Goldfinches. There has been a constant mix of these birds (about 50), all trying to fill their gizzards before nightfall.

I wonder what outside will look like in the morning!

Thanks, Dan.

I think today we will just stay put and not try to go anywhere. We can watch a little football on the TV and keep an eye on the bird feeders to see what pops in.

So far the only birds to show up are cardinals, juncos, goldfinches and a downy.

Carolina Wren
Red-bellied Woodpecker
House Finch
White-breasted Nuthatch
Blue Jay
Black-capped Chickadee
Red-breasted Nuthatch
House Sparrow
Northern Flicker
Brown Creeper

* And would you believe it, no starlings!

Here are a couple of shots of our backyard feeder setup. I use the metal barrels to keep the Fox Squirrels from destroying our feeders (one metal barrel on top of another barrel). The squirrels can not jump quite that high. The feeders are two Black Oil Sunflower, two raw suet, two Niger Seed and one peanut feeder.

Photo # 1, feeder after our recent ice storm.
Photo # 2, the ice is gone, but we got @ 10 inches of snow.
Photo # 3, a Blue Jay on the peanut feeder.
Photo # 4, House Finches and Goldfinches coming to the feeders

Hi Larry

Sorry to hear about your horrible weather. I hope it has settled once again.

Loved your piccies of your birds. The Wren what a beauty. You have a great list of birds that we in the UK would love to see. I can see one of the Woodies in your piccies. Is it a Red Bellied or a Downie?

Looks cold, so I hope it is a short snap and it clears again. It has its good points that you have a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH or two, and seven PINE SISKINS, hey we all would dream of that to see on our feeders.

Amkid247: It looks although you have other attractions too. A yellow bellied sapsucker. Love to see that bird. Is it a type of Humming Bird?

Love to hear non British birds, as it adds to the colourful life we all have in caring, and sharing birds as we do.

Regards
Kathy
