March 18, 2009 The male Cinnamon Teal continues to hang around with a pair of Blue-winged Teal in the Nelson Road pool just to the south of Saint Joseph off of "U" Highway. In addition to seeing the CITE this morning, I also saw not one, but two male CITE X BWTE hybrids. The first was the one Steve Kinder and I saw a couple of days ago. If you continue west on Nelson Road after viewing the CITE and go straight on the gravel road when the paved road veers to the right, you will find a narrow strip of water bordered by cattails on the left side of the gravel road. This first hybrid is hanging out with a couple of BWTE in this location. The second male CITE X BWTE hybrid is in the company of some BWTE on the west end of Lake Contrary. I first saw this hybrid yesterday and it was in the same location today! Muskrat Lake is beginning to draw in some shorebirds. Today I observed Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Pectoral Sandpipers, Long-billed Dowitchers and a Wilson's Snipe on the north side of this lake. Also present there was a flock of 30 Greater White-fronted Geese and an assortment of ducks. The 25 or so gulls at the edge of the water were all Ring-billed. Waterfowl seen around the various oxbows today included: Greater White-fronted Goose, Canada Goose, Wood Duck, Gadwall, American Wigeon, Mallard, Blue-winged Teal, Cinnamon Teal + the 2 hybrids, Northern Shoveler, Green-winged Teal, Ring-necked Duck, Greater Scaup (on Horseshoe Lake), Lesser Scaup, Bufflehead, Hooded Merganser, Common Merganser and Ruddy Duck. I observed a flock of about 30 Cedar Waxwings in the trees between Lake Contrary and the Missouri River while driving the loop around Lake Contrary. Sparrows seen this morning were: American Tree, Savannah, Fox, Song, Swamp, Harris's and, of course, Dark-eyed Juncos. I did not see any Great-tailed Grackles at the Saint Joseph Stockyards, but there were quite a few Eurasian Collared-Doves there. * We have not seen the Red Crossbills for four days now. They must be gone!
