March 21, 2009, Saint Joseph Area Birds This morning Brenda and I took a Saint Joseph birding couple out for some birding around Saint Joseph's oxbow lakes area. It began with the "promised target bird", Cinnamon Teal, in the pool south of Nelson Road, south of Saint Joseph. It was there with an assortment of other ducks and Wilson's Snipe. Just a little further west was the Cinnamon Teal X Blue-winged Teal hybrid, although great views were not forthcoming as the pair of Blue-winged Teal and the hybrid were mostly out of sight and then flew off, not to be seen again. We had various waterfowl totaling sixteen (16) species, excluding the hybrid. Mud Lake held three flocks of American White Pelicans (estimated 300 total). There were about 150 Great-tailed Grackles over on Muskrat Lake. Also at this lake were Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Pectoral Sandpiper and a Long-billed Dowitcher. The bird of the day was also here on the grassy lined shoreline. It was a breeding plumaged, adult female Lapland Longpur. This is a late date for me for this species in northwest Missouri! We found four or five American Pipits in a disked bean field around Horseshoe Lake. This was a FOY for me. I think we ended up with 50 species. Not an exceptional total, but it was a good day to be out and about with fine weather and great friends!
