Oxbow Lakes Region, Saint Joseph, Missouri, April 6, 2009 Total species count for this morning was 64. This morning I searched in vain for a Cinnamon Teal or even a BWTE x CITE hybrid. I saw a lot of BWTE and GWTE, but not CITE. Of course, it (they) may have been hidden by the dry cattails as many of the teal were seeking some shelter there from the rather high winds today. I did record fifteen (15) species of waterfowl: Greater White-fronted Goose, Snow Goose, Canada Goose, Wood Duck, Gadwall, American Wigeon, Mallard, Blue-winged Teal, Northern Shoveler, Green-winged Teal, Ring-necked Duck, Lesser Scaup, Bufflehead, Hooded Merganser and Ruddy Duck. I might have had a Greater Scaup on Horseshoe but it was too distant and did not fly so I could not get a positive ID. There are a lot of American White Pelican and Double-crested Cormorant currently passing through our area. I observed several Great Blue Herons and eight (8) Great Egrets this morning. Several Turkey Vultures were seen as well as a hunting Northern Harrier and a couple of American Kestrels. Lots of American Coots in all areas. Shorebirds seen were: Killdeer, Greater Yellowlegs, Lesser Yellowlegs, Baird's Sandpiper, FOY Dunlin (one at west end of Lake Contrary and another on Muskrat Lake), fifteen (15) Long-billed Dowitchers and one Wilson's Snipe. On Mud Lake I encountered a small flock of gulls, probably about twenty (20) Ring-billed Gulls which were keeping company with seven (7) FOY Bonaparte's Gulls. * This morning I found one Loggerhead Shrike along U Highway south of Saint Joseph. I have not seen this species for many months in the area around Saint Joseph, so it came as quite a surprise to see this one this morning! "sparrows" seen today: Eastern Towhee (a male in our yard), Vesper Sparrow, Savannah Sparrow, Song Sparrow, White-throated Sparrow, Harris's Sparrow and Dark-eyed Junco. * The juncos usually leave our area on April 15, so I do not expect to see them too much longer! Eastern and Western Meadowlarks were singing dispite the colder temps and high winds.
