This morning I followed up a lead given to me by Brent Galliart, a relative new-comer to our birding fraternity here in Saint Joseph, concerning a SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER. He had spotted this species a few days ago and told me about his sighting. The bird was seen by him in the vicinity of Genefield Road & Riverside Street. This is the location of Saint Joseph Christian School. I found a male bird on a telephone wire right at the above intersection. After a minute or so after I noticed it, it flew off. Subsequently, I saw a STFL fly into a small nearby tree. I am not certain if it was the same bird or a different one. From the short time I was able to view it, I got the impression that it was a female bird. There was also, what appeared to be, the beginnings of a nest in another nearby tree. Perhaps we will be having another nesting pair here in Saint Joe! I then headed down around the oxbows and saw four (4) Swainson's Hawks in the area around Horseshoe/Muskrat Lakes. A LITTLE BLUE HERON, a WHITE-FACED IBIS and 3 CATTLE EGRETS were over at Muskrat Lake. Oh, also there was one male GREAT-TAILED GRACKLE. Due to all the recent rains Horseshoe Lake is mostly devoid of cattails. So there is an open expanse of water fringed with willow trees. I did not see very much in this area, just some GREAT BLUE HERONS, AMERICAN COOTS, orioles, blackbirds, etc.
