Saint Joseph, Missouri, Oxbow Lakes Region We got a little break in the "heat wave" yesterday and today, so I ventured out around the Saint Joseph oxbow lakes area (a little south of St. Joseph) this morning and saw 45 species + "meadowlark" [spp]. Horseshoe Lake on Pettet (Pettit) Road off of 59 Highway produced most of the species seen. Of special note: ~20 Great Blue Herons, similar number of Great Egrets, one Snowy Egret and two immature Little Blue Herons (still in all white plumage). These were at Horseshoe. In addition to the above I counted twenty-two Cattle Egrets all perched in a lake side tree on the shore of Muskrat Lake (there may have been more with the Angus Cattle, but I could not locate the cattle this morning). The lone Snow Goose was still hanging out with the Canada Geese on Horseshoe. A pair of Mallards and ~ ten Wood Ducks were also on the lake. About 30 American White Pelicans and one Double-crested Cormorant were biding their time on Horseshoe. I only saw one Forster's Tern and one Caspian Tern this morning (Horseshoe Lake). I did see three or four Blue Grosbeaks on Contrary Creek Road in the first mile off of 59 Highway. (This is the first road heading west, north of Pettet Road.) Cross the RR tracks and pay particular attention to the utility wires. The Blue Grosbeak(s) (this morning 3 or 4) and also the Loggerhead Shirke are usually found on these wires. You might get a Western Kingbird, too. Grasshopper Sparrow continue to sing and perch on the barbed wire fence around Muskrat Lake. Lark Sparrows are abundant in all the areas. All the swallow were also in evidence, save the Bank Swallow which I did not observe. Also, I saw no Purple Martins today. After lunch at home, I glanced out the window to our backyard and saw a Ruby-throated Hummingbird feeding at some of our flowers.
