Oxbow Lakes Birding, Saint Joseph, Missouri The waterfowl around Lake Contrary this morning included (my FOS) COMMON GOLDENEYE, a single male, hanging out with Canada Geese, Gadwall, American Wigeon, Mallard, Northern Shoveler, Green-winged Teal, Ring-necked Duck, Lesser Scaup, Bufflehead and Ruddy Ducks. * There was a single Greater White-fronted Goose who chose to associate with the decoys over on Mud Lake. (No other "live" waterfowl present). Also on L. Contrary were seven (7) Horned Grebes. On Muskrat Lake I observed one Franklin's Gull, two Bonaparte's Gulls and about 35 Ring-billed Gulls. Would you believe it, I could not find any shorebirds, not even a Killdeer (in any of the areas I visited)! Over at Muskrat Lake several American Pipits were picking around in a wet, harvested corn field (opposite the lake). In another harvested field in the general area I was able to get some peeks at some of the 150 LAPLAND LONGSPURS which were flying around and feeding there. Other more regularly occurring species brought my morning's count up to 55.
