Trying to identify some WW2 binoculars (1 Viewer)

Hi everyone!

My grandpa has always had these binoculars and I wanted to see if anyone knew when they were made/who they would have been made for etc. We know that he was a British soldier stationed in the Netherlands between Autumn 1944 and Spring 1945 and acquired them when he was there (presumabley from a German soldier). I think they are Carl Zeiss Jena. They are very worn down so not sure if you would be able to get much information from them, but anything would be helpful!

Thank you so much!

Hello Kittymorse,

I can read Zeiss Jena on the right prism plate, so that is right. If I read the serial number correctly, 1007658, the binocular was made around 1918-1919. It would be the military version of the 6x24 Telex. Perhaps, someone else would know if the leather rain guard is original.

Good luck,
Arthur Pinewood

Most likely that bino was made in 1920. The serial number appears to be 1007855. It is a D.F. 6x24, ie. a Doppelfernrohr magnification 6x, objective diameter 24 mm. It is a military version of the Telex with individual focussing. The large knob at the bottom of the hinge is typical for Zeiss military binos of the time.

The large knob on the front bridge is part of an IPD recording mechanism.
Once set, the binocular halves could be moved closer or further apart, and then snapped back to the set IPD!
(Primarily for when a binocular was opened wider to place it in a typical hard leather carry case?)

I like that idea, and have wished for it many times.

I was thinking more along the lines of a gauge to close the halves on, and then remove.

Never pursued it
