15th February; part I The street lights flicked off as we cruised west through Colwyn Bay towards Angelsey, breakfasting on the sausage & bacon rolls I’d prepared the night before. We had one stop off en route; Llanbedr-y-cennin. In spite of scoring Hawfinch at Rufford at the beginning of the year I was tempted by reports of up to twenty here over the past few weeks, so we spent half an hour or so getting nothing but fleeting and sub-par views from various spots around the village, finally calling time on the enterprise, and ending up scoping at least seven in a tree top from back where the car was parked up. Raven over was new for the year. Next stop was Inland Sea, where in glorious weather (gods what a welcome change that’s been) we scanned around the area just west of the A55, coming up with scattered groups of Pale-bellied Brent Geese (the prime reason for dropping in here), supported by a cast of numerous Goldeneye, Great Crested Grebes, a handfull of Red-breasted Mergansers and a Great Northern Diver. Round the corner at Four Mile Bridge there were no Meds to be had, but a load more Goldeneye, a few Brents, Pintail and a couple of Grey Plover. Tide a bit on the low side to go looking for Purple Sands at Trearddur, so we continued on through to Porth Dafarch and had one of those great “there it is” before even applying the brakes, let alone stopping the car moments. Iceland Gull, top bird, owned the field it did, brazen. (I’ll break the account there, and do it in 5-photo batches, so to speak.)
