(The county has finally made the 150 mark in the form of a very early Common tern reported at Far Pasture!I only guessing but id like to see the year total reaching 250 so only 100 to go.

(Next migrant in 27/3 at St Marys in the form of a Swallow might go there tomorrow as still need Gadwall which is still there county year total reported 151)

(A real spate of records has started to pour in a spring gets underway Velvet scoter was off Whitburn 20th with 1-2 Black redstarts there through the week and House Martin 29th and Little ringed Plover30th both at Birtley sewage works bringing the county total year list up to 155

(late report of Osprey 28/3 from St Marys.Sandwich tern also new in on the coast,male Mandarin at Far pasture; county year list now 158)P.s i was informed on sunday of a probable Lesser spotted woodpecker drumming at Heaton park the birder saw the bird without bins but size and speed of drumming fitted.

Very little of note due to site a bit exposed to todays strong westerlies
Redwing 1.
Canada goose 4.

St. Marys Is.
again a rather exposed site for todays wind nothing so very little seen.

(1st Willow warbler in for the year on the 5th at Shibdon pond brings the Tyne and wear total up to 159)

(two new species for the year bring the county total up to 161 these were Yellow wagtail over Sunderland and Black tailed Godwit at St. Marys both yesterday 7th)

( A good record from LSB of a Red legged partridge at St. Marys on the 8th brings the county total up to 162!)

(still relatively slow going migrant-wise only new species in for the county is Common sandpiper on 14th at Lamesley Meadows 163 is now the county total)

(Whitburn came up trumps on the 15th with no less than 3 new county additions there were in the form of Manx shearwater,Whimbrel and Arctic tern.Stargate near Gateshead had a male Redstart which was new as was Ring Ouzel at Ravensworth on the 16th bringing the county steaming ahead to 168.I unfortunately havent been out lately although im itching to!! :-C )

(a couple of new birds brings the county total to 170! these are Grasshopper warbler at Usworth Estate in Washington 16th and the slightly dubious Blue winged Teal at St.Marys since 17th.Will go over tomorrow)

(six new species have been added to the county tally a mega early Swift on the 20th was seen at Lamesley,followed by Sedge warbler and Hobby both on the 22nd at Shibdon and Marsden quarry respectly.The last three were all today 23rd and these were Tree pipit at Chopwell[a favourite spot for this species],Whitethroat at Burdon moor and lastly Garganey at Lamesley again)
This last site seems to be getting alot of deserved attention.County total now up to 176!!! :t:

25TH APRIL St.Marys Is.
No sign of Blue winged teal!
111.Black tailed Godwit 1
Swallow 3+
Holywell Dene
112.Willow warbler 3+ more heard
113.Blackcap 3 more heard
114.Tawny owl 1 seen briefly in flight after being mobbed
Chiffchaff 2
Siskin 1 seen very close
St. Marys Is.
After the brief morning visit went back for more extensive search.

A total of 58 species was seen in the 3 hours out !!
No sign of Blue winged teal!

(a spate of summer migrants have continued to compliment the years total these have included Water Pipit on the 23-24th April at Lamesley!Lesser Whitethroat at Stargate on the 27th and Garden Warbler 28th of April at Shibdon.May records stated with Marsh Harrier over the South Shields leas on the 1st and Wood Warbler on the 2nd at Strother Hills.....County total now at 181)

117.Swift Several in Tynemouth
(Some belated and recent records nearly complete the summer migrants are as follows Reed Warbler at St. Marys,Arctic tern and common sandpiper at Whitburn were on the 1st.Black tern an amazing flock of 5 were at Bigwaters on the 4th.Spotted flycatcher was at Ravensworth fell on the 5th. Two Little terns off Whitburn,Wood sandpiper at West pastures and Cuckoo at Stargate were all on the 6th.Today the final tern of the set Roseate tern was seen at St.Marys.Not sure if its the first of the year but seems to be Whinchat was seen way back at St. Marys on the 1st? bringing the county total up to an amazing 190!!!)

been meaning to get over to this reserve for some time especially to see the plovers which have numbered up to 9!
(a MEGA in the form of 2 Gull billed terns were seen at Whitburn at 19.40 then at St.Marys followed apparently at Newbiggin on the 9th.This constitutes the second record im aware of for the Tyne and Wear county the first being at st.Marys during the 70's)

(after the Gull billed terns on the 9th Whitburn came up trumps again in the form of an adult Isabelline Shrike!The bird was only seen for a few hours and is only the 3rd record for Tyne and wear.There is also a possiblity the the bird belongs to the eastern race (known as Turkestan Shrike)which is very rare in Britain.But not resting on its laurels Whiturn(and initally South Shields)produced another NE mega a Black Stork was seen flying over on the 16th and seen to come down at Jackies Beach but couldnt be relocated!!On more normal note a Greenshank at Lamsley on the 14th constitues the first for the year.County total is now 194!!!

22nd May Whitburn country park
125.Woodchat shrike 1 ad. Seen terribly due to wind and rain and more
more rain.seen for a total of 3 seconds as it
scurried between its favourite bushes!!!
(new birds for the county total continue with South Tyneside leading the way[who says us in Northumberland get all the birds?].As mentioned Woodchat shrike was seen at Whiburn and continues to be seen there.A Quail at West Pastures was both audable and visible! end of last week and again on the 23rd.North Tyneside did have something though in the form of Pectoral Sandpiper at Backworth on 22nd/23rd...total now up to 197!!

(This week has seen Golden Oriole and Hen Harrier added to this years county list and with Spoonbill today brings the total up to the Grand list up to 200 !!! .Amazingly all were all were in the Cleadon area,fustratingly all were one day birds with the latter two been fly overs!)
