I saw my first Anisoptera on 25th. I watched fascinated as the larva climbed our neighbour's wall (which is about 6m away from our pond) to a height of about 2m. It took it all day but eventually a female broad-bodied chaser appeared and pumped up its wings. It was raining by this stage and it was still there the following morning at 8.00 a.m. By 9.00 it had gone. I didn't see it leave but I hope that it had a succesful maiden flight. (The photos are in chronological order. The last one was taken at about 6.30 a.m. on the day when it departed.)

A wonderful sequence Ken, many thanks for sharing!

Green-eyed Hawker on the 26th was my 15th species for the year but as I'm in Bulgaria I guess that's kind of cheating!

Finally got going with Large Red Damselfly on 27 May. This afternoon I added Hairy Dragonfly, Broad-bodied Chaser, Beautiful Demoiselle and Blue-tailed Damselfly, so the sudden warm weather must be accelerating things considerably!

Finally saw my first Large Red Damselfly of the year on the 27th and the following day I had a look at a couple of local sites for Northern Damselfly and White-faced Darter. No luck, but I saw my first Four-spotted Chaser of the year yesterday.

Great excitement on my part today as I got a brief view of a hairy dragonfly at east Wichel along the fake canal. It's one of my favourite sites in Swindon and this was a new species for me there. Also a teneral four-spotted chaser, a female broad-bodied chaser who may have been egg-laying, and large numbers of azure damsels. Oh, and a single large red which had managed to survive the recent cold weather. Nice to have the season properly up and running at last.
