I went to Southend yesterday and saw lots of birds (quite a few new ones for me!) but a few have got me kerfuzzled and I'm not sure all these pics will be good enough to tell what they are but if anyone can help then that would be brilliant and well appreciated. The first shot of a young gull on the end of the pier is, I think, probably a black-headed gull but something makes me wonder if it might be a Mediterranean Gull? Something about it looks not 'quite' BHG but but not knowing much about gulls let alone juveniles I'm inclined towards the adage of it being much more likely to be the one you see a lot rather than one you've not yet seen but would like to! The second is of a small wader some way out on the foreshore near Southend pier. I really am hopeless at the little waders (and not much better with bigger ones!) and looking through the guide books all I can say with certainty is it's a bird, probably a wader. ;) Anyone able to enlighten me from this shot? Dave, the guy I went with, said he thought there were Dunlin and Knot but although I think Dunlin have a little bend in the bill (?) I'm a bit lost. The third shot, taken at Leigh-on-Sea I'm 'fairly' sure is a black-tailed godwit as the tail is showing here, but would be great if someone who know's such things can confirm or deny that... The fourth shot is another of the little waders. I think there's a bent bill on most of these (not the redshank bottom right of course) so are they Dunlin? There's one at the back (middle bird of the far three) that looks like it may have a straight bill but I don't know if that makes it a knot or it's just a dodgy angle it's photographed from. Any help very welcome indeed!
