UK snake? (1 Viewer)

Morning,
Just been sent this photo of a snake crossing the road in East Hertfordshire. I write a nature column for the local newspaper and have no idea on this one. Looks to be around 6 foot long as the lane here is 12 foot wide. Not aware of female grass snakes being white, or do they go this colour whilst sloughing? Any suggestions gratefully received. Many thanks

Yep. Burmese Python I reckon, there's a popular captive pale morph with pale yellow markings. Don't suppose it will survive the winter but there might be some surprised small animals before then.

They are now also a pest in the USA where released, former pets have thrived and become an apex predator in the Florida everglades, at great cost to local wildlife.

Indeed, I believe the advice if one crosses the road in front of your car is to accelerate.

A very good cautionary tale about invasive aliens - but such a cautionary tale shouldn't be needed.
