I took this photo today at Lake Fairfax in northern Virginia. Both photos are of the same diving duck. It's smaller than a mallard, about the size of a wood duck, but I can't identify it. Can anyone help supply an ID?

Your bird is a Pied-billed Grebe

It is a Pied-billed Grebe, in non-breeding plumage. In summer, it is a little more distinctive.
